YONKERS — A 35-year-old Yonkers man with a history of psychiatric problems kicked a 6-year-old girl in the face for no apparent reason as she shopped at a Pathmark supermarket with her father, police said.
The youngster was treated at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville for bruising and swelling to the left side of the face. She was later released.
Arrested was Robert Gjonlekaj of 419 Palmer Road. He was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
Police in the 1st Precinct said the child was with her 39-year-old father, a Yonkers resident, in the supermarket at 9:36 p.m. Sunday when the incident happened. A witness who was also shopping in the store told police that she heard Gjonlekaj talking to himself before kicking the girl in the face.
Gjonlekaj's mother later told police that her son was treated at the Bronx Psychiatric Center for schizophrenia for three years.
