I stared at this odd little fish in the tank that I'd never seen or heard of before, called "CowFish":

I stared for several minutes, genuinely mesmerized by its strangeness. It floated awkwardly through the water, rocking as its little fins worked to propel iot and get itself into positions it wanted to be in, areas of the tank it wanted to be at. It was looking at me. It didn't seem to have a body to me. It seemed like just a head. It was about the size of one's thumb.

I've never owned fish. They are interesting and some very beautiful, but they always seem very ill at ease to me, and often times horrified. This awkward little soul seemed all of that and more. Like it was upset at being so poorly designed as a physical being. I got an idea that it wasn't a real fish borne of natural selection, but was something the ominously named "PetCo" had whipped up in its laboratories at the behest of some young exec who proposed "CowFish" at a meeting or something. And now the clumsily rocking was begging me to put it out of its misery.
