SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE HPV, SPREAD OR WIPED OUT?
Let me start by saying that I have very little medical training and am certainly not anywhere near an expert in disease. I am just a normal person who has done some research. I’ve been interested in the spread of Human papilloma virus for some time now. What started my interest was the statistics I read from the National Institute of Health that said HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Some HPV strains (there are over 100) cause warts, genital or otherwise which may be treated but not cured. Many strains have NO symptoms at all. So if you are infected and have no symptoms, you can still spread the disease to your sex partner. And many, many people have. Government studies also say that just in America, over 20 million people are infected right now and 5.5 million more will be infected this year. There is no cure for HPV. May seem like an odd thing for me to be thinking and writing about, but I have actually been interested in this for some time. And this infection is not talked about in the adult industry. Everyone of course is concerned with HIV. There are occasional out breaks of gonorrhea. And then of course the standard yeast infections and Chlamydia, that keep actors from working are all tested for during their (at least) monthly blood and urine screenings. But HPV is a recommended test, not a required one. As a matter of fact any woman going for a regular female exam may not even be tested for HPV unless she specifically asks for it. You may be thinking, well if so many people have it, and lots don’t even have any symptoms, what’s the big deal? The big deal is HPV can cause cervical cancer!
The reason I have brought this all up now is that today the FDA approved a vaccination (owned by Merck) that if given to a young woman before she has sexual activity will prevent her from catching HPV, and therefore cut her chances of getting cervical cancer by 70%! This is a huge breakthrough in the battle against cancer and the transmission of HPV. Wonderful news right? I think so. But there are some born again moral minority types who think the vaccine is going to encourage young people to have sex. OH MY GOD. Kids could still get pregnant and catch a ton of other diseases, but now that they won’t get HPV, they decide they should go ahead and have sex! It’s so amazing to me that some people could be so irrational, and blind to reality I just want to shake them until the holy water on their brain spills out and they either come to their senses or I throw them and their know it all, holier then thou attitude onto a burning Bush, hopefully George Jr.
So anyway, get tested for HPV, and have your daughter vaccinated against it. And tell the people protesting against it to go do something important, like picket the DaVinci Code, that movie needs all the press it can get!
