There was a time when I thought Gregor Dark was up to something when he started directing music videos for teen popstars like Britney Spears and Mandy Moore. That at some point he was going to pull the threads of his career together somehow and juxtapose the peniporn and the antiseptic teeniporn- pointing out uncomfortable parallels and frissions. I don't mean he was going to talk Christine Aguilera into doing a blowgag bang with a bunch of guys dressed up like gumball machines. I don't know what he was going to do, but the total commitment I witnessed pornographically on his part in his 80's and 90's work left me no doubt that it was something than ran deep in him, undeniable. Unfortunately it never happened. My heart skipped a beat when Britney Spears' people came out in the press and claimed they had no knowledge of Gregor's pornography work when he was hired to direct Brit's video, but it didn't go any farther than that. And his mainstream work didn't dry up as a result. He continued with the gummypop idols, working responsibly even with a group with as unintentionally suggestive a name as "The A Teens". The last thing I saw Dark do that looked like that Dark I became malformed by and grew up with was the 'Wrong Way' video for Sublime, with all his Aztec colored sexually bright but despairing motifs in place. But even though now he seems to be branching out into teen horror, the ties with his heartfelt past seem no stronger than with the cleany teeny pop stuff on the basis of that trailer. It looks like a typical horror by committee movie for the 11-18 demographic whose parents by them tickets. I wish Dark would return to his roots and his muse and make horror movies like he used to. Crash pans from hostile gangbangs to a post interview in which he asks the woman- skin still flushed, eyes glazed, the semen not yet wiped from her face- "Would it make any difference if a stranger walked in off the street and beat off another load onto your face right now?"
