that album,ready to die,first wu disc/raekwon/gza/meth solos, firing squad all fucking came out in 1993-6, i was a rich, white kid at boarding school about as far from a wigger as imaginable and those fucking blew my mind. for like two-three years DJ Premier and rza produced some albums that hold up to the point they're still scattered around various hard drives and ipods of mine and get played a decade later when i generally think rap's retarded. they're just good music.

both everything Eddie and James listed are great, but dont forget about Mobb Deep's "The Infamous"...that was some savage shit.
Gangstarr "Hard to earn" was amazing too.

Who do you think was buying all of these albums? White kids from the suburbs, that's who. Sadly, I moved to a very small town in late '94 that had no MTV and I completely missed the East Coast answer to "The Chronic". As far as I'm concerned, rap perfection is trapped in amber circa '93, ending with "Doggystyle". The joy was over when Snoop and his bodyguard capped that hater and he damn near took a long vacation in the Big House, grunge faltered, and the Third Eye Blind's of this world assumed control.

Thank you for steppin in wit that true knowledge BUT,you are sleepin or dead if you wait until the black album to peep jay.Reasonable Doubt was a turning point in rap.Away from useless gangster giberish to street education that is as relevant today as it was the day Jay spit it.A veritable water-shed moment.The ripple of enertia from a force that would change a lot more than just rap,and if you pay attention to the lyrics,you can hear the power of the under tow.Great thread Eddie, God's Son stays in my rotation.
Lastly rap was built on the principle of giving a voice to the youth that have something to say that may help someone else or, each one teach one.If you remove the layers of testosterone,and pubescent bravado and the bling bling of the have-nots,you will hear words that literally will save someone's life.I like T.I. as much as the next rap fan,but as far as Jay's empty seat goes...my money is on Lil Wayne.
Hustler Music(posted on myspace)affected me the same way as Dead Presidents did,the same as Tupac coming into his own IMHO and spitting Makavelli,I get a tear in my eye and my throat gets a little tight just thinking about that shit.....

Hey Bishop, you're definitely right about Reasonable Doubt, but if you look at my list I was refering to albums after 2000 (there's also no Biggie/Tupac). I only do this because I get annoyed when white people give rap the death sentencefir any music made after 1994 (btw i'm also white) I just wanted to put up some great albums from the past 5 or so years. Also, I didn't put up God's Son because, athough i think it's Nas' best and most mature album, people should listen to his other material first if they're not familiar with Nas.
And for Lil' Wayne, my friend got Tha Carter II, I previewed it and liked it, but never listen to it more, I'll give him a look. Btw I just copped TI - King, pretty hot.

Cool, doesn't matter if you are black or white only that you feel the music.I will generally reserve opinion on the new kids at least until their sophmore effort.Too often they fall off or sell out.Not trying to take anything from T.I.
