Went to Peter Luger's for dinner tonite, had the creamed spinach and french fries (they're to die for, real potatoes, deep fried) for appetizers and a T-bone for all 3 of us, It was huge, I brought 1/2 of it home to my American Staffordshire. Great as always, drank 2 bottles of a red Cabernet Sauvignon, Im not really a wine drinker so I dont know if that was a good one or not. But the meal was exquisite. And not as crowded as usual, in and out in an 1 hour 1/2.

well i woke up at 6 20am today after being up until 230 working on a paper, im now going to bed at 1:05 am after doing another 7 hours of work, and the one thing keeping me going, is a hot ham and cheese bagel and fresh squeezed orange juice tommorrow morning, and honestly i cant wait.

i potentially might drag a bottle of cooks into my bagel place to satisfy my crippling alcohol addiction, and quite frankly i fucking earned it.

sleep well those who enjoy lunch

Today I had the fajita skillet from the downstairs cafeteria. A pan was heated with cooking oil to which fresh shredded cilantro was added, then chicken and beef strips, diced tomatoes, chopped green peppers, corn off the cob, jalapeño peppers and chipotle seasonings were all sauteed over a high flame, then two cups of cooked rice were added, heated a bit longer, then a slice of jalapeño pepper jack cheese and a pile of shredded sharp cheddar cheese were scooped over the entire skillet. This was heated for a bit longer, then poured onto a plate. I added a scoop of guacamole, a dollop of sour cream and grabbed some pre-packaged taco sauce. A slice of Mexican corn bread was served on the side.

This was a lot of food to consume in one meal, and I was incapable of clearing my plate. Mama would not be proud of her little boy today.

How was LUNCH! for you

Today I had dampfnudeln (dumplings) and a Wienerschnitzel (wiener sausage). My girlfriend made these, and even though she hates cooking, I wasn't going to take her out.
To make matters worse, she invited her bitchy friend Elke whose a real annoying slut and always finds something to bitch about. Today is one of those days I wish I didn't live in LA (although that happens at least once a day so maybe todays situation was magnified).

Let's hope Friday's luncheon is a good one.

Wienerschnitzel are breaded veal cutlets.

The "Wiener" is for "from Vienna," Wein in Deutsch.

ARANCINI with extra marinara sauce and slice of garlic bread on the side along with a Manhattan Special on tap. You can only find this coffee soda on tap in special locations in Brooklyn. Its the bomb diggity!!

In Vegas until Wednesday when I have photo gigs lined up in la for 2 weeks straight. Went to the Liberace Museum and sadly, it wasn't as gaudy or as gay as I wanted. Interestingly, most of his costumes weighed 200 lbs in rhinestones and he had a favorite poodle named Baby Boy. Had 2 vodkas on the rocks across the street at Rum Runner, went to a garage sale in Spanish Trails, then had half an 8 oz filet mignon, raw/uncooked asparagus, and half a bottle of champagne all by 1pm today. I order steak rare and it's never as rare as I'd like; nevertheless, a wonderful lunch.

Holy shit, Gia from reading a lot of your lunch posts I though you ate like a sparrow, but steak sounds good. Think I might grill one up in a couple of hours.

Yesterday my wife and I were shopping and she grabbed a chicken/shrimp stir fry combo with Japanese noodles. I went to the chinese place in the food court and grabbed mango shrimp, spring rolls and an Orange Julius rasberry delight smoothie. It was just mall food, but we certainly didn't walk away hungry.

LUNCH today was an almond butter sandwich with raisins and then some carrots and ranch dip for dessert. Yesterday, I actually had breakfast for supper.

I like cereal without sultanas. Over in Australia most of the cereals are really healthy apart from fruit loops and coco pops

I never have butter or margarine on bread or toast either. Ever since I was little I never understood why you needed to have butter or margarine on bread as well as jam or whatever else you put on it. Butter or jam just seemed really unnecessary

Today my girlfriend woke up early, fried potatoes, made some pico di gallo and sausage and served it with a tortilla. It was good. I washed this meal down with water while my girlfriend opted for coffee.

Later tonight she leaves for Italy for the weekend while I plan how best to stay alcoholed. Stay tuned!

Does that mean it was served with shrimps? Yumm....

I was in Albuquerque, NM today, and had lunch at the Flying Star Cafe in the Southern Union Gas building downtown. I had a Thai salad with satay beef and a lime dressing, vaguely reminiscent of the Thai restaurant I frequented when living in Pleasant Hill, CA. I took care not to let people see me log onto XPT.

This means tasso and andouille as the flavoring backbone.

Additional meats might include catfish, shrimp, chicken, rabbit, alligator, etc., but it's all about the tasso and andouille.

Fortunately, here in Portland, Hawthorne Pastaworks carries both tasso (in the secret freezer, gotta ask) and andouille, so I purchase several half-pound packages of each to freeze and make:

http://www.catfishinstitute.com/?q=catfish_jambalaya.html

Unfortunately, if you live in some god forsaken place like Ohio or Arizona, real jambalaya will be denied and instead, you'll have to eat Cincinnati Chili or chimichangas, respectively...

It had ham but not exactly Tasso, it was more of what we get in a puerto rican butcher instead and yes there was andouille, I wouldnt eat it if it had rabbit, alligator or meats of that sort, only shrimp, chicken, crawfish tails, andouille and ham those were the only meats in it, Im not from there so to me this is as good as I know.

Today I meet this chick working in the wardrobe department. I actually forget her name (how embarrassing) but I know it's foreign and starts with an "L". I asked her for clothing dye and she took me to the inventory room with a bunch of stuff. She's amazingly gorgeous. I made up and excuse to take her to LUNCH

We went to Bossa Nova on Sunset. This is a good place to get Caprese and Chicken Fingers; but I opted for the Quatro Formaggi: mozzarella, provolone, fontina and gorgonzola cheeses, topped with green onions and black pepper, while she ordered the Blue Salad: fresh lettuce, slivered almonds topped with crumbled blue cheese and sliced boiled egg, with our homemade blue cheese dressing.

I washed this wonderful meal down with passion fruit juice and my date had a guaraná.At LUNCH I found out she's from Kazakhstan but she has such a removed look: like a stwardess from Cathy Pacific Airways; not really Asian and not really European either- perhaps a mixture of the two.

What a lunch I had today.

Last night was the strangest of rituals: after work everyone scurried to the Miranda for the good ol' Nick partay- something very unbecoming of us considering the fact that the entire day we did absolutely nothing but eat a bunch of sugar cookies and toss about reese's pieces peanut butter cups.

Today was even worse. I was woken up at 6am. My neighbor- the somehow foreign and forever dressed to the 9's Yoko was complaining that someone was making a huge racket just a few hours ago. I didn't tell her about my hedonistic night- nor the fact that I couldn't remember when I got home: I simply played the concerned neighbor, let her vent and went back to try and sober up.

By 9 I was at work and miserable. I should have stayed home but after being woken up I sometimes have a hard time going back to sleep. Regardless I hate wasting time doing nothing- and I just I felt like it justified my time to be at work- even though I was, inexplicably doing nothing.

At Noon I went downstairs to get a salmon teriyaki with rice platter which comes with steamed vegetables on the side. I had the choice between a sobe type drink and some green tea and I opted for the tea- mainly because I was still feeling like shit and I also hate really tasty drinks.

20 minutes after my meal my shoulder was knotted up bad. I contemplated going to get a massage but oddly enough- I found the idea rather... sleazy and uncomfortable. I hate to be touched.

Today I handmade chicken cordon bleu.... flattened boneless chicken breast with a layer of cooked ham (not very fatty at all), and cheese rolled up into a solid unit, breaded, deep-fried and then baked and served with a heap of lemony hollandaise sauce.

On the side I had a choice of mashed and baked potatoes, a mixed pile of steamed peas and carrots and a sesame-crusted slice of vienna bread with butter spread across the side.

My friend Henri showed up with his wife (I think it's funny this guy is married because he's the biggest player in the world) and brought over a bottle of white wine. Who the hell drinks white wine? Tomorrow they're flying to Kiribati supposedly to celebrate their anniversary. I find it odd that some people choose to celebrate months together.

Before taking E to the airport, we got hungry and had time to spare. Eventually, we were going to get something to eat, but E insisted on going to the pet store in Beverly Center to look at the dogs. I always feel like I'm going to catch a disease there, and he said sitting outside waiting for him was ridiculous, so I walked around the store with my hands in my pockets while he petted all the dogs and let a chihuahua lick his face. Then he went to Sabarros, ordered a slice of plain cheese, and I just had a bottled water because I felt soiled even though we washed my hands after the pet store episode. I drove him to the airport then went home and made myself 3 egg whites and a bountiful wakame salad with bok choy and avocado slices.

"If you think about it, a greasy slab of cured pork belly is no odder than many other foods that have historically been considered aphrodisiacs: asparagus, artichokes, avocadoes, bananas, black beans, chili peppers, figs, licorice and pine nuts have all been hailed for their ability to arouse desire.

In renaissance Europe, women were forbidden to eat artichokes, which according to legend had been created when the Greek god Zeus transformed a young maiden into the spiky vegetable. As a result, they were prescribed to men to improve their bedroom performance.

Of history's most famous aphrodisiacs, only chocolate and oysters still hold claim to their sensual reputation.

While the physical suggestion of sex may be enough for some, modern research shows that some classic aphrodisiacs can stimulate desire - and increase performance. Oysters, for example, contain high levels of zinc, which has been associated with increased sexual potency in men.

The smell of food, too, can elicit sexual feelings, according to research by Alan Hirsch, the neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. Having noticed that people who lost their sense of smell also had a diminished sexual appetite.

Men responded to all of the aromas. But the top spot went to a blend of pumpkin pie and lavender, which increased blood flow 40 percent of the time. Runners-up were doughnuts with black licorice (31.5 percent) and pumpkin pie with doughnuts (20 percent).

Women, in contrast, responded most to the blend of cucumber and licorice - two traditional aphrodisiacs - and the scent of baby powder. But perhaps more revealing were the three scents that turned women off: cherries, barbecued meat and men's cologne. So much for the thrill of the grill.

In the end, Sean was right. Aphrodisiacs are personal. He loves bacon, while my friend James can't think of anything sexier than Nutella, that thick chocolate-hazelnut spread that is "perfect for feeding each other," he says.

And for "InterCourses" author Hopkins, the sexiest food is grilled asparagus dipped in her French boyfriend's homemade mayonnaise. But, she adds, the greatest turn-on of all is when he cooks, and then does the dishes."

Disagree with asparagus...stinky pee!

Today was Alan (my girlfriends co-workers birthday) and they wanted to have his birthday lunch/dinner at The Westin Bonaventure. This is exactly the sort of place I loath going- which meant I had a 2 hour argument with my girlfriend concerning whether or not I should even attend.

I ended up fscking going. As soon as we got there, there was this woman outside who insisted her child to fscking say the most ridiculous thing. The child was clueless about what it should be saying and the mother- a real princess- kept repeating in a high and annoying voice "Say it honey. Tell it to mommy." She repeated this about 10 times.

Inside we were greeted by some dude- no idea who but he referred to himself as "we". He had a strange accent, or at least, he went to great lengths to give himself one. I thought it was amusing and kept asking him questions just to make the fake accent more apparent.

He led us to the dining room where the rest of the party was- all made up of people my girlfriend works with- meaning people I try not to get along with. One of them is this really goofy guy called Cliff who has the strangest laugh in the world. The guy that makes me feel most awkward however is Alan- a homosexual Asian dude that goes to great lengths to make himself stand out as a gay guy. All the women look alike and speak about the same shit- which is usually who bought what house or who saw who at some place. The only person I get along with is Elka and Mona- Elka because she's painfully hot and Mona because-- I actually have no idea why Mona and I get along.

I personally didn't order an appetizer but noticed Elka- one of the girlfriend's best buddies and probably the only person I really speak to order the Serrano ham and arugula salad with provencal black olive tapenade. She wasn't able to finish it and I asked her why and she said the tapenade was too dry.

For the main meal I had a Fettuccini mari monte which came with sauteed shrimp, chicken with fresh tomato, mushrooom and rosemary in a pinot grigio butter (oh la la).

Elka and the gf ordered korean style braised short ribs with garlic whipped potatoes in a cripsy spring roll, kumquat confit, baby carrots and grilled asparagus.

Someone ordered prime rib which we all took a piece off since it was unbelievably good. I suggest if you want to come to this place you take out a second mortgage on your house. The only good thing is that we got some coconut ice-cream thing at the end from the waitress; probably due to the fact we were very animated like kids and we spent what seemed like hours there. If I wasn't so full- I'd have hit their bar for a real drink.

I made myself chicken soup this afternoon since I was feeling ill and chilled. 3 chicken legs, a few left over chicken bones, large spanish onion, 2 large carrots, 3 turnips, the useless parts celery and a small amount of spaghetti sauce left over in a jar.

Yum.

Today we feasted on Raclette with potatoes, small gherkins, cocktail onions and sliced peppers that I made for LUNCH. Had a bunch of people over like Sparky, Madam, theGriz rocking his super sweet stash and French.

We sat around debating war movies and making fun of theGriz. Good food and good laughs begins a good weekend.

It's a scrapped cheese dish from Switzerland. Usually you heat the cheese then scrap it onto the dinner plate and yack while you wait for your meal to cool. It's a very social thing to eat.

I do love the way you make the raclette. The hot stone makes all the difference.

Today we had a LUNCH time get together with most of the people from work. What this consists of is people going down to the cafeteria, grabbing food, complaining that they're not hungry then talking amongst the tight cliques. It's high-school all over again.

We had some Eastern cuisine today: there was Bami Goreng, some Fish Amritsari and lots of Tandoori mixed sizzlers. Lena came over and joined my humble self (that's the chick from Kazakhstan)- I managed to convince her we grab a plate of some Vegetable Samosas and our main dish; she opted for the Chicken Vindaloo (ouch) while I opted for the Chicken Tikka Masala (the masala was labeled as smooth but it stung)- Lena's food was hot. I could tell.

Half way into our meal this fucknut called Doug came over and went "You mind if I join you guys?" Later some other chick joined us (forgot her name already) and she started going off about how she's used to wrestle in college. The conversation got very odd.

For some reason, I read this as "Bambi Göering" and thought she was some new German porn whore.

Bami Goreng is pretty good. You should try it sometime. Today I had stuffed salmon with crab and brie cheese, mashed potatoes and crab cakes. For desert I had fudge and washed this down with Sonoma Cutrer Chard.

What the hell nobody eats anymore?

I had a 6 piece buffalo wing special dripping with Benny's special BBQ sauce (if thats even what he uses) @ Beeny's Bar-B-Q in Marina del Ray. I went with Rachel and not sure what she ate: we were both animals tearing our food like a pack of wolves.

2 weeks of catering food in the desert does the body bad.

I just went out for lunch and had a nice salmon pizza--and it wasn't even from CPK. Obviously there is some salmon and it's round; the nice touches were carmelized red onions and capers which gave a savory taste to it.

Zenner's Cajun hot link with kraut and yellow mustard plus potato salad from the Dog House.

Upcoming lunches will no doubt include a shit load of Ukrainian food that I'm cooking over the four-day weekend: Borscht, Vinegret, Golubtsi, and Vareniki.

Cleaned the Hawthorne Safeway out of beets!

Also, have some leftover 4-star spicy (produces immediate flushness and forehead sweat) Pad Thai from Thai Go and last weekend's home-cooked Carnitas, Arroz Rojo, Frijoles Sencilos and Roasted Tomato and Jalapeno Salsa to deal with.

Gunker: are you Ukrainian? I leave for Kiev this Monday. Strangely enough, the hotel where I'm staying at seems to favor Italian cuisine over the local delicacies.

Today for lunch we had Mini Baked Potatoes with Smoked Haddock and Leek Compote with a Moretti for energy. This was at a friends place who bares a striking resemblance to Anja Garbarek.

Only 50%, with no knowledge of the culture other than overhearing my father's hideous Polka music and the dishes my mother (and now, myself) cooked. The fact that the hotel prefers Italian is not surprising...

I'm pretty sure that the food in Kiev will suck, but the architecture and history will be amazing.

I wonder if Baba Yar is a tourist destination?

http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976748996

"Kyiv contained a Jewish population of 175,000+ in 1941 on the eve of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Nazi forces captured the city in mid-September in less than 2 weeks. It was on the September 29th. & 30th. that 34,000 Jews of the ghetto were brought to the ravine known as Baba Yar. Baba Yar was located in close proximity to the Jewish Cemetary. Baba Yar is the site where men, women & children were mechanically machine-gunned in a 2-day living Hell of execution. In the following months the majority of the remaining Jewish population of the city of Kyiv was brutally & mechanically exterminated.

Called "the most appalling massacre of the war," the mass exterminations at BabaYar is alluded to as a prime example of utter Jewish helplessness in the face of disaster. Very few Jews were able to fight back. They had no weapons, they had no training & they had no leadership. Jews by the 10's of 1000's, with all the pathetic belongings that they could carry, were herded into barbed-wire deliniated areas at the top of the ravine. There they were guarded by Ukrainian Nazi collaborators. It was in these barb-wire pens that they were stripped & beaten. When the time was right they were then led in irregular groups down the side of the ravine. The first groups were forced to lie on the ground, face down & were machine-gunned by the Nazis in a steady volley of death."

***

"After the initial massacre, the Baba Yar site was converted into a permanent slave labor & extermination camp. It was here that 10's of 1000's of victims from other parts of the Ukraine were sent for extermination. It was then called the Syrets camp. This was name of a close Kyiv sector. Several hundred specifically selected prisoners were kept there at the camp. These technical specialists such as carpenters, shoemakers, tailors, metal workers, elctricians, pipe fitters, machinists, & orher artisans. They were kept to to serve the needs of the SS men & the Ukrainian collaborator-guards. These select workers were usually killed within a month or 2 as they were replaced by new prisoners who continued their duties. Paul von Radomski was nthe Kommandant in charge of the administration & ultimately the killing of these prisoners. Paul von Radomski seemed to crave a reputation for outdoing his sadist colleagues in other camps so he made it a point to keep on killing prisoners on a regular schedule.

Baba Yar is now National Park of Ukraine. The ravine has been filled in, memorials erected to all of those who were murdered there, the Jews, the Rroma (gypsies), Hungarians, Bulgarians, Tartars, Armenians, Ukrianians, captured partisans, homosexuals, priests & others whom the Nazis deemed as being in need of death."

Be sure to take some pictures of this accursed part of the globe, Loop!

Will do. By the way, why do you say the food in Kiev will suck?

Making the stereotypical assumption about restaurants in the former U.S.S.R.

Looking forward to your report and hope I'm wrong.

Gunker, the food was actually very good. I went mostly to places around Maydan Nezalejnost where I had kyshka (blood sausage).

One cool joint is Fellini which was highly recommended and Le Cosmopolite. The hotel I stayed at had really bland food and also way too much Italian food on the menu; not that I don't like Italian cuisine but whats the point of going to Ukraine to eat pizza?

The positive side however was that it was located in the historic part of the city (Shevchenka Blvd: named after some poet) and the concierge was unbelievably hot. Come to think of it, 90% of the women in this city were unbelievably hot. I might have to take a trip without the gf next time

It's really hard to find a decent place to eat in the winter, especially the more popular spots like Vechirniy Kyiv which has the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted. Another really popular spot is Domashnya kuhnya smack down in the middle of B' Khmelnitskogo Street where we had something called Kutya: a Christmas food which was the chef's special the day we were there. Oddest meal I ever ate but pretty good. By the way, Ukraine doesn't celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. They follow the Orthodox calender which means Christmas is in January, so on the 25th it's a regular workday.

I'm not sure whether you go there (or have plans of going) but one place I'd recommend is Rodina Mat (unreal), Independence Square (Archangel Michael monument), Tarasa Shevchenka lane (at night), Baron Munchausen for the excellent selection of liquor, Andriivsky Uzviz Street and hitting up Odessa for the night life; hegre-art must get their models from here. The downside about Odessa is the lack of a metro system, but the city is littered with young hunnies here.

Also- there was this really cool place which was an underground bunker (I think peeps hid here during World War 2). I don't know the name of the place, but it was like a gulag and located in Kirovohrad (south of Kiev on the way to Odessa). Anyhoo- the place was full of Soviet memorabilia, World War 2 memorials and lots of chicks called Olga.

Btw: Baba Yar isn't exactly a tourist spot (actually very rarely mentioned). There is a big monument there (very similar to the one in Sobibor, Poland).
