That's funny, because Tony Iommi is the one who said Jimmy Page invented it.

Led Zeppelin have nothing to do with metal. Iommi started it, Tipton furthered it, Hanneman perfected it.

My friend, you post well here @ XPT. But this sentence just don't make a licka sense. Maybe you're a little less elderly than I, I dunno. But in 1976, even the Sabbathians, the Foghat lovers, and the Kiss Army paid some respect to Led Zep. Lookm I'm sorry they wrote "Carouselambra" and "All of My Love" too. But you can't deny much of the rest.
Please don't make me pull out the "Osbournes" card.
Sorry for the hijack, smartt...carry on [/hijack]

Bullshit. Led Zeppelin was a great influence in lots of heavy metal bands, in particular the "melodic metal" ones. When you see John Sykes using a violin arc to play, you know where Jimmy Page has been.

Listening to Sabbath vis a vis LZ is like listening to the Dave Clark 5 vis a vis the Beatles. Sure they're fine, but why not go for the real thing.

Willie D, you are not the first "elder" to tell me otherwise on Zep. I guess I deny it because I didnt grow up on it. Everything I heard from them was on the radio, and we all know how useless radio rock can be. So I dismissed them as having anything to do with influencing metal or heavy music in general. Thats the image I have of them, just a radio rock band. I later found out that they were much "deeper" than that. It's a bitter pill I have trouble swallowing, and should put personal bias aside. For me it was always about all things heavy when it came to music. The dark grooves of Sabbath led me to Master of Puppets, and then it goes haywire from there.

There are a few critical differences between BS and LZ that define BS as more "metal" than LZ. Bear in mind that I am a drummer, so I am partial to LZ (Bonham, God of Drummers), but there are differences that make LZ less "metal" than BS.
Page played most riffs as a single note part doubling what the bass did an octave higher, while Tony Iommi played power chords most of time. Power chords sound much heavier and are the foundation of metal.
The riffs LZ plays are more blues based than BS. BS's riffs sound more "evil" because of Iommi's use of minor /diminished scales.
Iommi also had a much more distored guitar tone than Page. After the first LZ album Page gets cleaner and cleaner while Iommi gets more and more metal.
A huge difference is in the production. While LZ was mostly huge drums and bass with trebly guitar riding on top, BS is monster guitars augmented by bass and drums.
While LZ may have laid the groundwork for metal, BS is the first metal band.

The problem is newer bands dont know history. Some new band maybe influenced by Metallica and not know that they were influenced by Diamond Head in the early 80's; who in turn, were influeced by Sabbath.
You take Thin Lizzy´s "Massacre" and the clothes used by UFO (and some of their musics, sure), and you get the blueprint for Iron Maiden.

I´d just add that, while Jimmy Page was a skilled studio musician who played on almost every album of every genre made in England during the 60´s, Tony Iommi had to develop his own style because he´d lost part of his fingers.
And John Bonham was a highly technical drummer, while Bill Ward, in his own words, "just kinda followed whatever Terry and Tony were doing". And, IMO, it worked fine for the Sabbath sound.

If you can find it check out Live Yardbirds with Jimmy Page at the Anderson Theatre. This is the band that layed the blueprint for Zep and Sabbath and the rest.
