I don't think the only metaphor for sex found in pornography is loneliness, I think you're bringing in your own morality there. However, as to whether we are intellectual enough to see porn as anything beyond "whack material", I think the existence of XPT and the posters here show that clearly we do. There's enough mental masturbation here about the how and why of porn to counteract any actual masturbation...
