According to Paul Hogan ( Crocodile Dundee ) Los Angeles is a weird place "like a Coal mining town except that noone actually works in the mines - everyone is just hanging around"
I think he means that LA is like this weird city out in the desert that has been built specifically for the film industry with everyone there working or looking for work in films
