If your reading Davinci Code, read Holy Blood, Holy Grail... the source material is much better.

I don't read much fiction, but...

American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Weaveworld by Clive Barker
Death Rides a Pale Horse - Peirs Anthony

once again, i dont read much recent fiction... but i would reccommmend reading some Bradbury.

BTW, sorry to be a killjoy, but the Dan Brown industry, ie his books and the books he "based" his books upon have been shown to be about 90% bullshit.

So nice read, but don't take anything in it too seriously.

you'll be a stupider person for reading a word of dan brown.

best xpt-level degeneracy book out there?

not william b, hunter, etc.

frederick exley's "a fan's notes". he pretty much was the sir mix a lot of books--he wrote what floofin's boy kurt von. and a number of others consider the best american novel of the latter half of the century. then he died. it's pretty good if you're sick of faggy ian macwhatever shit from the times book review or toni morrison seems as shitty a writer to you as she does to me and you forever mistrust them.

best writer-george e. 'cept he was a she, brazilian-style. russians bear some mention as competitors, as do joyce, homer and the guy from rome with the book about anus.

you want multiculturalism that doesn't make blacks and gays look stupid and inferior like maya angelou or richard wright?

james baldwin

you want to be something other than a bitchass-moron?

sorry pris.

I'll throw Mark Twain in here. Tom Sawyer is all fun and games. On the surface Huckleberry Finn is the same, but there is so much more there. The Mysterious Stranger is as dark as a work can get, especially considering the time it was written.

Vonnegut is a great author who is crossing generations. I remember picking up my Dad's copy of Cats Cradle, then seeking out everything else I could find. Years later my younger brothers brought home Slaughterhouse Five as homework. They got hooked and I turned them onto my books. I recently watched my oldest son go through the same thing. An author who can cross those age gaps and still seem relevant has a gift.

I agree of course on Vonnegut, I found myself quickly addicted and roared through his whole works. You hit the head on Twain, his satire was flat out wicked, his wisdom is still relevant and he was nothing if not uniquely American. I guess what I'm saying is that I really need to read some Twain again. I also find it funny that Pris has started an interesting thread, go figure.

I struggled through Cat's Cradle. I just can't seem to get into literature as hard as I try. I even had to put down Heart of Darkness. The only two pieces of literature that I liked were 1984 and History of the Peloponessian War. Otherwise, its textbooks and non-fiction all the way for me.

With the exception of Suetonius (which I have not read), these are all excellent works.

Good pick, Gia. In My Dark Places is a great read. James Elroy's fiction work is pretty twisted & fun too. Check out his Killer on the Road, Blood on the Moon, Suicide Hill, & of course The Black Dahlia.

A few years back, Sandy Steward turned me on to Topping from Below by Laura Reese. It's got murder, s&m, humiliation, beastiality--it's like Red Dragon if written by the JM crew!

But, if you're really fucked up & need something to mellow you out after a stressful day, my personal fav is still American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.

Ellis has been one of my faves since I read Less Than Zero in 6th grade. Turns out my ex went to college with him and introduced us at a party.

I don't read very much. The best novel I ever read was 'The Executioner's Song', but that was some kind of second hand journalistic impressionism by Norman Mailer via Larry Schiller. I liked the part when Gilmore's autopsy is described. That's the climax. They peeled his face off, I remember.
I read a real good non fiction book recently titled 'The Red Hourglass'. I forget the author's name, but it is a series of slightly dark and grostesque naturalist essays about various animals: pigs, dogs, brown recluse spiders, praying mantids, black widows...It is extraordinarily beautiful.

I recommend Don Delillos' "White Noise" and Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" and "The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell" a first hand and thoughtful account of Army service in Iraq.

the rule is that for every one fiction book (see: complete crap, the "now that's what i call music vol 36" of text), you read five non-fiction books.

a dictionary, you dumb motherfuck. you ought to attempt to relearn your mother-tongue with the enthusiasm and single-minded dedication of an asian youth. i suggest that you start immediately. first, by setting aside the illusory pleasures of the flesh. second, by picking up "logic and conversation" by HP Grice.

Not really. I picked up a few books (the titles escape me now), but a lot of the content was just a retread of what I already new from reading Kings. I tell ya, Kings completely blew my mind. If it wasn't true, you would never think anyone could make up such an outrageous story. Definitely worth tracking down (It is out of print. You can find it through Barnes and Nobles Used Books. In paperback form it is titled Kings of Cocaine: An Astonshing True Story of Murder, Money and Corruption).

I actually watched a doco on the Columbian cocaine cartels last night, and they interviewed Jeff Leen. I may have to find this book...

Yea, grab Killing Pablo by Mark Bowden(he wrote the novel to Blackhawk Down). The book deals with U.S./Columbian efforts to hunt down and kill Pablo Escobar, the head of the Medellian Drug Cartel. Notice I didn't say 'capture'.
