Get real. You rent a dvd, you're obviously going to copy it, whether than be through video copy or dvd copy, and the Macrovision can always be disabled. DVD rental is for porn lovers to pirate dvds. Rental should be banned!

DVDs withstand heat much better than a VHS shell & tape. In this part of the country people put a tape to return in their car before going to work and let it bake all day. When they return it on the way home the tape can be damaged so that it become almost unwatchable.
A lot of times the shell melts and the clerks can spot it and charge bozo on the spot for the damage. But a lot of times the shell won't have obvious melt damage, and the not-quite-complete-idiot will return the rape when traffic is high so the clerks don't have time to look close. The next customer returns the tape as defective, and there's way to tell whose fault it was, so the store has to eat it.
The local store seems to stock about 50%/50% DVD/VHS but still rents much more VHS than DVD. The owner tries to talk every regular he can into renting DVD, and I suspect this is a big part of it.
He doesn't rack DVDs differently: they're mixed in with the VHS (usually a VHS box in front, because they'er easier to read without the protective plastic and with a larger size). DVD and VHS for rental are behind the VHS tape on the rack.
