This happened in my town. I haven't looked at the papers to see where it happened but it was a 25-car train, which means freight or coal/rock. Those usually come through town at night.

This was a clear afternoon. My guess is that the track is rarely used in daytime ... but that there was a train run that day for whatever reason. She was walking on the tracks. She may simply have never seen a train in daylight there before. Bad assumption.

She would have a low-frequency rumble for a few seconds at most, but enough time to jump to the side. Either she was listening to a radio, just plain missed it, didn't realize what it was, or thought it was a truck on an adjacent road.
