But this chart in a paper published by the CDC gives a non-zero estimate of risk. This is taken from a 2002 paper I've never been able to track down.

The problem is that condoms aren't good enough to rely on in porn. When you start multiplying out the failure rates against the number of scenes the performers do condoms simply aren't enough to keep the performers HIV-.

If you could do both testing *and* condoms then you would increase the odds, but I can't see people continuing to emphasize (expensive, inconvenient) testing if condoms are used.

Right now any performer can refuse to work with a partner without a test and nobody is going to complain about it. But if condoms became mandatory I suspect, at least at the lower-tier companies, there would be pressure to work with people whose test turned out to be slightly out-of-date, or perhaps some hot newbie whose test hadn't come back yet. I can imagine T.T. Boy saying “This is her first scene! She's from Kansas! You'll use a condom! Don't make me can the shoot!” Not to mention performers who might be more willing to present a fake test to save a few bucks (that happens some already, though rarely).

It's worth noting that gay porn uses condoms and refuses to do testing, and it's widely assumed there are a lot of HIV+ performers in gay porn - after all, nobody will stop you from continuing to perform after you become HIV+, because nobody will know, and if there's a reservoir of HIV+ amongst performers it will spread some over time through condom failure. Indeed I'm not sure they try to keep on HIV+ guys out of the performer pool in the first place.

To suggest condoms are the answer you really have to show that gay porn is somehow safer than straight porn, and the evidence doesn't exist. Based on the obituaries it certainly hasn't been true in the past.
