There was a chain of adult theatres called "Pussycat" in L.A. and they maintained strict decorum standards, like in most theatres until relatively recently. Ushers would walk the aisles every so often, and you would no sooner whack off there than you would at your neighborhood mainstream theatre. (And yes, there are exceptions, we've all cut a hole in the bottom of a popcorn tub or had a surreptitious quickie but that happens everywhere.) The company was run by a guy who kept certain rules, including one that said that nothing tangible like a leaflet or flyer would ever be available in Pussycat Theatres because it could wind up a piece of litter and get picked up by a kid, which is bad for everybody.
When watching porn became a solitary pursuit, attitudes changed. It wasn't "going to the movies" any more, it was "get yourself turned on so you can whack off." Attitudes have also changed in mainstream, where you go into a movie theatre and half the audience is talking at full voice volume to the other half.
