YONKERS — A 6-year-old boy is in stable condition after drinking Gatorade spiked with what police now believe was a date rape drug known as GHB.
Police initially said the boy had unintentionally overdosed on liquid Ecstasy.
It was brought to his home by a visitor disguised in a Gatorade drink, police said.
The boy fell limp last night at his Yonkers home and was rushed by his father to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville.
By this morning, the child had been transferred to another hospital, Yonkers Police Commissioner Robert Taggart said.
Police refused to release other details late this morning, citing an investigation.
So far, no one has been charged.
GHB, or gamma hydroxybutrate, is a depressant with sedative effects. It is considered a date rape drug because it can incapacitate someone when mixed with alcohol.
GHB is also called liquid Ecstasy. The difference is that Ecstasy is a stimulant with hallucinogenic effects.
The boy drank the drug-spiked Gatorade shortly after 7 p.m. yesterday.
How much the boy drank was not clear.
There were several visitors in the house, and the boy's father was not in the room at the time, according to police.
Social service workers have intervened, police added.
