Christian, from what I understand there have been times in U.S. history when surveillance lists have existed for certain books being checked out of libraries. Hate literature, Nazi stuff definitely. I want to say that this was even a thread in a Tom Clancy novel, but its been years since I've read any of them, I could be wrong. Given the current state of world affairs, I wouldn't be surprised if there were currently some books that get a person red-flagged on a list somewhere. However, the internet has probably made such a list obsolete in regards to library books, so maybe its just an online thing now, or both.

In a word: yes. In a phrase: don't worry about it.
After Oklahoma City, it became priority one to infiltrate the movement, which wasn't terribly hard. Groups like the National Alliance are little more than book clubs for literate Nazis, and their mailing list was compromised as far back as the early 1980s. I don't believe it was ever definitively established, but one staffer there in the mid- to late-1990s rose to a pretty high position and later vanished, most likely into another assignment. These groups make their money through the mail, and for the National Alliance, everything is mailed from one rural location. It wouldn't be hard to create a composite list at the post office even if they didn't have the database (which they absolutely do).
What they do with the mailing list is another matter. The whole thing is probably littered with the names of informants, journalists, professors, and other non-Nazis. What they do, if I understand internal procedures correctly, is stick the name in a kind of digital card catalog file with the name and the simple statement to the effect of "Appears in 9/2001 NA database copy". While this itself might be frightening, there is a huge step between this and opening up an investigation against a specific person. It's only a "list" in the sense of your name appearing somewhere in the huge data clusterfuck in the Hoover Building, not necessarily a "suspects list" or what not.
You never have to fear being under surveillance for this type of thing. The FBI will simply knock on your door. They can get better information on whether you'll bomb a synagogue for kicks from a face-to-face than they can shoving a rotorooter up your DMV and Equifax reports.

With the rise in digitally available (and searchable) information you start to run into trouble when you show up on 2 or 3 of these 'cards' - I'm sure there are bots programmed to see if you are just hate-curious or a flaming hater. If you ping too many times, it would be a simple matter to get your 'file' flagged, and then a real live human might take a special interest in your special interests.
