True...AVN can provide no hard and fast figures on sales (look at how they purport to collect said data), nor any figures to back up their claim about how many billions a year the XXX industry is worth. Just ask for proof, and watch the AVN'ers scuttle off...it's quite literally a figure pulled out of Fishbein's ass, and they have done nothing to prove otherwise.
I was talking with Mark Kernes at AVN earlier this week at the "Celebrate Free Speech Lobbying Days" event in Sacramento. I remembered this thread, and raised the issue of the sales charts with him. Mark found it rather humorous and represented to me that AVN does indeed have a system in place, unrelated to advertising revenue.
According to Mark, there are about 35-50 retailers that report to them the top sellers each month and they compile the top sellers charts from this data. He said the process is not a secret and as far as he knows, no one has ever really asked about the methodology of the charts before.
