Herzog Shot During Interview

HOLLYWOOD - German director Werner Herzog was shot by a crazed fan during a recent interview with the BBC.
The 63-year-old was chatting with movie journalist Mark Kermode about his documentary Grizzly Man, when a sniper opened fire with an air rifle.

Kermode explains, "I thought a firecracker had gone off.

"Herzog, as if it was the most normal thing in the world, said, 'Oh, someone is shooting at us. We must go.'

"He had a bruise the size of a snooker ball, with a hole in. He just carried on with the interview while bleeding quietly in his boxer shorts."

An unrepentant Herzog insisted, "It was not a significant bullet. I am not afraid."

This is the man who worked with Klaus Kinski and ate his shoe as a bet. I doubt anything can phase him.

This might be a dumb question, but is it true that Ian Curtis of Joy Division killed himself while watching Herzog's Stroszek? I think I heard it was during the dancing chickens part.

Close. Or 'Closer' in a sense...heh, heh. After watching the Herzog's Stroszek, he hanged himself in the kitchen while listening to Iggy Pop.

I find the way films the likes of 'Aguirre, the Wrath of God' and 'Stroszek' and 'Hearts of Glass' and 'Nosferatu' and 'Woyzeck' and 'Where the Green Ants Dream' have their titles tossed about here in the pursuit of trite jokery to be deeply disturbing.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Cobra Verde. That was probably my favorite film the two worked on together. Kinski was probably on the verge of a breakdown at this point. Herzog had to direct him while pointing a gun to his head.
