I just watched 1987's
Angel Heart (the movie that SANK Lisa Bonet's career even though she was totally hott and did a great acting job) for the first time in several years....this movie is awesome. I read the Original Book that the screenplay was based upon,
Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg, about the same time the movie first came out, and BOTH the book and the movie are compelling, especially when juxtaposed to the Porn World and what takes place on a daily basis. The story of Harry Angel (played by Mickey Rourke) and what he did in the story REALLY follows what porn is all about....consider...
Harry Angel (or "johnny" as he was known prior to his attempt at soul stealing) sells his soul to Satan for Singing Stardom, during the outbreak of World War Two. The movie depicts Johnny Favorite, the crooner, giving up his soul for the fleeting, temporary pleasures of Stardom (which we can assume involve sex and women and all the shit people fixate upon as being behind the reason for life...) The guy, however, upon realizing what he has done, tries to back out of it, and steals the soul of Harry Angel, an innocent G.I. ...the soul is "Stolen" via a ritual involving satanic magic culminating in Johnny EATING Harry Angel's still beating heart after he slices him open. The EVIL that Johnny/Harry embodies is so COMPLETE and so REAl, because the guy did it for reasons we all deal with and confront each day, SELFISH URGES for shit we shouldn't indulge in...and then he compounds his error by trying to abrogate responsibility for his actions. It's classic short term thinking, i.e. Porn behavior....
A chick who, for whatever reason, can't deal with or accept a life of basic normal responsibility decides to dive in and perform as many sexually depraved acts on film for as much money as she can for as long as she can, fixating on the money (or peudo-stardom porn offers, or perhaps even the sexual indulgence)...in other words, FUCK the Future, I am going to enjoy the next 2-3 years, then I'll deal with whatever fallout/consequences come along. I WANT IT NOW and I dont want to work for it...or so it seems, so they think...
The consequences come calling like Louis Cyphre (SATAN played by Rober Deniro)...drug addiction, money addiction, STDS, suicides, scumbags who rip them off and abuse them and a whole shitload of other issues which represent the consequences of taking the easy way out, and trying to avoid responsibility. The Porn World NEVER takes responsibility for anything, people croak, get used, tossed aside, abused and everyone just shrugs and says, "hey man, she made a choice..." The whole motivation behind AIM testing, when you get right down to it, is about avoiding responsibility...the responsibility that SEX used to carry. There is no responsibility anymore, people just fuck whoever and whenever they want...this is madness! It's like everyone has sold their soul! I love it....
Watch Angel Heart, and pay attention to the dialogue, there are some great quotes in the movie. One of my favorites:
Fat New Orleans COP: "We Found Toots Sweet Dead, and your card was in his pocket Mr Angel."
Harry Angel: "How'd he die?"
Cop: "Technically? Asphyxiation by his own genitalia.....SOMEBODY CUT HIS DICK AND BALLS OFF AND SHOVED THEM DOWN HIS THROAT!"
