Commentator are typically those who commentate in person or on TV. Commentarists are writers. Google it.

Even they have put the word in quote marks...and the only people that seem to be using the word when you google it are Venezuelans. Of course, you could be right and 'commentarist' could indeed be perfectly cromulent, so I thank you for embiggening my volcabulary if that is indeed the case, but from what I've seen, people who refer to thgemselves as 'commentarists' are and take themselves a little bit to seriously. Oh, and they don't just write either.

Commentarist just strikes me as another example of sloppy English standards in the US, like the fact that premier and premiere are both pronounced the same, and both wrong too...'premeeer' when it it should be 'prem-i-uh' and 'prem-i-air' respectively, but no-one ever calls anyone out on their completely fucked up pronounciation, and thus the vicious cycle continues...
