I'm inclined to suspect wrong-headed game-play over deliberate malice. Holly isn't stupid. She must have had some idea of how her behavior would inflame Luke's possesive instincts, but (maybe I'm wrong) I don't read her as a bitch who would deliberately rub it in for no purpose.
