The AVN awards are an awards ceremony that seemingly drags on for hours. All the porn stars get dressed up in their finest garb and attend the event. Active talent gets free tickets. Everyone else pays $250 a ticket. By the time AVN starts, supposedly 90% of the tickets are already sold out. I've also heard that there are standing room tickets that go for $100. Something in the area of 750 tickets go to talent and the press, and what remains of the 4,000 available tickets are sold to the public. If you are buying a ticket, you have an option of buying a whole table of tickets (for your group). If you buy, say two tickets, you are randomly assigned a table (i.e. you have no idea of who will be at your table). I have a ticket, but its for a table way in the back, so I'm hoping I can find a colleague with an extra ticket for a better table position.
