In the late 1940's old man Binion rolled into Vegas with two million cash and two dead bodies haunting him back in Texas. Thanks to cash pay-offs he was never shipped back to the Lone Star state for murder one charges.
Binions closure is just about the last nail for old Vegas. (With the exception of mayor Oscar Goodman) They were in the hole for millions: Nevada Power, IRS (payroll, back taxes, etc.), Freemont Street Neonopolis, Union Benefits, Failure To Pay Major Jackpots, etc. All this contributed to the death of that rat hole. I remember the last time I was there and seeing a fist fight in the poker room - and one of the guys brawling happened to be an employee. Crazy shithole.
People think Vegas was built by Italian and Jewish mobsters alone. Well, it wasn't. Folks tend to forget the cowboy element that was beyond ruthless. Guys like Binion, Boyd, and near-shitkickers like Jackie Gaughn.
It had to have been a blast.
