Most likely they are saddled with a huge amount of guilt brought about by their piety, yet clearly have a strong (and normal) desire to see some tittahhhhs. So in an effort to reconcile the two, they seek comfort in espousing the scripture just in case the Big Guy happens to peek into the "Candy Store" and sees him there. Its just denial.
