The scumbag de Valera chickened and sent Collins and Arthur Griffith of negotiate for Irish independence. de Valera knew he would lose and sent someone in his place to avoid the blame. On signing the treaty, Lord Birkenhead said he'd signed his political death-warrant. Collins replied, "I've signed my actual death-warrant."
