Haha! Yeah, wouldn't surprise if you not only live in California now, but actually grew up there with stories like this. Pledge of allegiance in my white suburban high school was just something everyone mindlessly did even though most of them failed couldn't didn't know what the overriding cause (more general than slavery) of the Civil War was. (that was an essay question on a history class exam I remember most people failed). Watching everybody passively recite the pledge day after day just seemed pointless, so I stopped.

Yeah, I ignored that in the first post. The Mexican national anthem thing is absurd. I'd expect to see something like that on Saturday Night Live making fun of political correctness before I saw it in the newspaper.
