EON MCKAI: Alt Porn Director Shoots the Fringes For VCA
CHATSWORTH, Calif. - Fledgling VCA Pictures director Eon McKai has two releases under his belt - Art School Sluts and his latest, Kill Girl Girl. Both feature goth, punk, alt and emo girls - definitely not your typical porn video fodder and from the moment the old school circa-1985 VCA Pictures logo comes on the screen, you believe McKai when he says he's majorly inspired by the work of Gregory Dark. Through his website, he puts off a distinctively non-mainstream sensibility and is part of a small growing alt porn movement embodied by the Suicide Girls phenomenon.
AVN: There are a lot of people who do the Art School Sluts type of look, but they don't give it the emotion.
EON MCKAI: Right. Yeah, I think maybe they're just sent out to do it. If anybody ever sent me out to make a movie I wasn't feeling, I wouldn't do it. I hear stories, like, trannies are really hot, they're going to send me out to make a tranny line. And it's like, dude, they should be sending somebody who really understands that world, you know? With Art School Sluts is I get these incredibly emotional postings on my message board ... it's like every couple of weeks, somebody writes two paragraphs, "Oh my fucking God. I can't believe somebody's finally made this movie." It's like they're having the same experience that I had when I found things like Suicide Girls. If you don't understand what the box cover looks like, then you're probably not going to like Art School Sluts and that's how people shop for adult movies. They go looking around at the box covers so it might not appeal to you, but it's fucking selling so I know the market's there. That's my other big point. That's what I want to get out, because people are looking for that stuff, and they're finding it few and far between. People will buy a movie with Rachel and Rob Rotten in it just for that scene, and suffer through the other stuff that's on there.
AVN: So you consider yourself part of a movement, almost.
EM: It's definitely a movement. I did a party in Vegas on the underground tip, and it was definitely about that. We need to all come together because I can only make so many fucking movies a year and I think people who would maybe start buying movies like this would become our regular customers if the product was more available.
AVN: The esthetic you're proposing is a change from what the atypical girl looks like in this business. How does that work?
EM: Well, they don't have to be a cheerleader or a schoolgirl today. It's really difficult. You need to see some kind of style in the girl. If it's not there, you can't shoot them and it's not going be good to dress them up. It's just not gonna work. It just needs to fucking happen.
AVN: What would you say Kill Girl Kill is about?
EM: Boys kill with violence; girls kill with sex.
AVN: That's tight.
EM: That's what the movie's about. I always turn in a two-sentence synopsis to VCA because I can't spell, I can't write, it's horrible. It's a wall to wall. People come in and hump.
AVN: People come in and hump.
EM: Which is what I needed to work on after Art School Sluts, right? That's what your review said and that's what you told me.
AVN: I liked it a lot. I just wanted to see better humping.
EM: Everybody wants better humping. Let's be honest! The stuff in between the humping is just for Eon McKai. Kill Girl Kill is really about focusing on the sex and not trying to be maybe as clever as I was in Art School Sluts.
AVN: So, future plans after Kill Girl Kill?
EM: I really want to pick up the New Wave Hooker series.
AVN: Wow.
EM: Killer. Right?
AVN: Killer. Yes.
EM: I asked Antonio Passolini if I could do it, and he said it was OK. Now's the time to bring it back with all the kind of electro styles that are out there. So I want to do New Wave Hookers in the electro style. You know what I mean? And I want to get a producer in San Francisco, Gold Chains to do music for it but I want to spell it "Neu," so it'll be Neu Wave.
AVN: You couldn't just leave it alone.
EM: Yeah, I mean, I have to fuck it up.
