Yeah it definitely seems like Katrina victims are getting a whole helluva lotta dough. I was sitting there wondering if Rita turns out to be a catastrophe, how are they going to tell Rita victims that you don't get as much as Katrina victims? No way you can keep giving money out like that.
YOu gotta wonder if Bush didn't see not only the disaster on the Gul Coast as well as the political catastrophe and say, "I'm going to fix that come hell or high water". And, then he fixes it with our money.
That said, I've got no basis for an opinion as to whether or not New Orleans should be rebuilt. I just don't know. But, it is hard for me to imagine it not being rebuilt. And, the estimates I've seen, they're saying $200 billion that they're kicking around now may not even be enough.
Pretty much what Iwas thinking too Drive. Bush wants to prove that he can "do the right thing" and help these people but to rebuilt it back to the way it was makes little sense. Why put a heavily population in an area below sea level? I say rebuild it without half the housing. Make it a tourist only city with just enough housing for the workers needed to populate such an area. This applies only to federal money, IMO, if you had insurance than that should take care of you ( and Bush should make sure that the insurance companies don't try to wiggle out- not counting flood insurance which people who live below sea level should have ). Why repopulate NO with too many people who cannot leave when the next hurricane whips through, that would make little sense. Many of the displaced, especially those without insurance will likely remain in their new locales or move elsewhere anyway.
