Two Bristol police officers are being accused of making racist remarks over a pirated radio broadcast on several occasions.
The Bristol Press reports that Captain Daniel Britt has been placed on paid leave and Sergeant Richard Valentine has filed for immediate retirement because of the allegations.
The state chapter of the NAACP and Bristol state Representative Roger Michele unveiled the allegations at a news conference Friday. They say the officers used a homemade studio at one of their homes to broadcast racist information on an unauthorized FM frequency.
"The call letters are WNFR. I won't say what the 'n' is but the next two letters are Free Radio," says Rep. Michele.
"It's not a regular radio station, it's a frequency they tap into for the purpose of broadcasting racially derogatory and defamatory statements," says NAACP attorney Dawn Westbrook.
The NAACP chapter has asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the allegations. Bristol Mayor Gerard Couture says the chief state's attorney's office is looking into the claims.
"It's a shock, but again, these are allegations and we will investigate to make sure our police department is held to the highest integrity," says Mayor Gerard Couture.
