That statement is very true of emo kids... like Eon and SG's true target. HOWEVER, if you look at the real Goth/Industrial scene it is mostly 20-40 year olds who work in tech/creative industries with LOTS of disposible income. I would say a good percentage of your average "goth" club patron in NY or LA probably are on the higher end of the income bracket due to predominantly being in fields like computer programmin, TV and film production and research jobs... they tend to be intellectuals who have a distaste for popular music and prefer something a little more thought provoking if not dance provoking... im not talking about your average metalhead or emo kid... im talking about the people who listen to music that ranges from folk, to celtic, to a darker form of hard trance, with a lot of interesting places in between.
