It does kind of irk me that only once or twice a year I'm in a context where I feel comfortable using nigger. What I've been told by family who were around way before civil rights was that "nigger" didn't use to have the strong connotation it does today. Like I was out with my grandfather and this black guy walks by with orange high-tops and the laces un-tied. With a big smile on his face, grandaddy points at the shoes and says "look at that nigger's shoes!". Of course my cousin flipped out making a huge deal, etc. So the word is different now, fair enough.
