Depends on where you live. Out on the west coast people are not as fanatical about their teams (unless they are winning). Once you move to the midwest/east coast people still cheer for their teams even when they suck. For example in Cleveland people love the Browns(Football), Indians(Baseball), and Cavs(Basketball) even though each sucks more ass than BI. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that there is so much to do in SoCal, where as in the midwest(especially)/back east(except NYC) there isn't as much to do. West Coasters aren't going to sit around and cheer for a bunch of losers when they can go to the beach/surf/parties/etc./etc...
