Gallant Opts Out of Hustler/VCA Contract

NEW YORK - Edgy AVN Award-winning pro-am director Joe Gallant has opted out of his contract with Hustler/VCA and is looking for a new production company with which to align his Black Mirror Productions.

The New York-based Gallant told AVN.com he resigned in an e-mail sent last weekend to the Hustler brass.

“I guess you could say it’s a case of east coast versus west coast sensibilities,” Gallant said in a telephone interview from his New York residence. “I’m used to doing things in a little more edgy manner out here in New York.”

Gallant’s one-year contract, which had escape clauses for both sides, called for him to deliver nine titles. At the time of his resignation, he had given Hustler/VCA three — Contract Girl, which he shot for Black Mirror before he signed the deal and then sold to them, and Ultra Vixens NYC and Killing Courtney Luv, fresh titles he shot for Hustler/VCA. Ultra Vixens streeted Aug. 9, while Killing Courtney Luv is scheduled to street Sept. 20, both for VCA.

Hustler was not immediately available for comment.

Gallant has twice won AVN’s Best Pro-Am Release award, first in 2003 for NYC Underground: Times Square Trash Vol. 2, then earlier this year for The Luv Generation, both from Black Mirror. His work is seen by some critics as revitalizing the pro-am genre and is characterized by story lines and healthy amounts of peeing, enemas and all manner of substances being spewed out of anuses.

Gallant is now actively looking to bring Black Mirror to another large Porn Valley production company.

“Ideally, I’d like to be the New York director for any forward-thinking company,” Gallant said, but emphasized he’d be willing to relocate to California, especially if he could be based in the Bay Area.

“My soul is sobbing for San Francisco,” said Gallant, who is also a professional rock musician whose orchestra, Illuminati, has re-envisioned the music of the Grateful Dead among other recordings.

JacktheZipper and Hustler Part Ways

LOS ANGELES - Director JacktheZipper’s third feature, Squealer, will be his last released with the Hustler logo on it, he announced today, due to differing needs and philosophies.


“I’m proud to have given Hustler their first multi-AVN Award winner in several years with Stuntgirl,” Zipper told AVN.com, “and I think Squealer will also stand the test of time.”

Reflecting nostalgically on Hustler’s meaning to him, Zipper had nothing but positive things to say about his relationship with the company.

“I remember that rush of finding a stack of rain-melted Hustler mags in the woods back in the day … like finding buried treasure,” he mused. “With Squealer I like to think I gave something back to Larry Flynt. It was part of my process while making the movie … that everything comes full circle.”

For their part, Hustler speaks very highly of Zipper’s creative ability, while promising a bright future without him on board.

“JacktheZipper is a very talented artist whose creative vision and requirements were not always congruent with what was necessary for Hustler Video,” said new media and marketing director Jeff Mullen. “With the emergence of Hustler TV providing video-on-demand content to an immense and rapidly growing audience, it is often times necessary to adjust some parameters of creativity to meet an expanding marketplace. The executives at Hustler Video and JacktheZipper decided not to agree on what those parameters were and the decision to part company was made.

“I can imagine how Beethoven might have reacted if he was told that he must adjust a few measures of one of his symphonies, but you must remember that back in the 18th century there was no VOD, and today more than ever, it is important to reach the widest possible audience. Hustler Video looks ahead with exciting and bold new releases continuing the tradition and excitement that is the Hustler brand.”

Zipper's departure from Hustler comes on the heels of Joe Gallant's separation with the company yesterday. Squealer is available now.

Van Styles Leaves Hustler Video

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Van Styles has announced that he is leaving Hustler Video after one year with the company.


“It has definitely been a strong year for me,” Styles said, “and I also got to see first-hand how a large corporation operates.”

The 25-year old director who shot Take It Black, Ass Appeal, Young Latin Ass and the acclaimed Barely Legal: Corrupted series for Hustler added, “As much as I appreciate Hustler's efforts to keep me at the company, I feel that it is the right time to seek new challenges.”

Hustler Video offered a statement on Styles' departure:

“We came to the end of the term for the contract we had with him and we tried to come to terms on an additional contract. I think he preferred not to be under contract with anyone at this time. We wish him well. We wish we could continue working with him, but it was a decision he made to move on. There are no bad feelings. We did extend an offer. We’re hopeful that as time moves on that he’ll be doing movies with us again in the future.”

Styles, a former professional skateboard instructor who got his start with Video Team in 2002, did not indicate his plans for future releases at press time.

Isn't Hustler recently involved with the whole IBill resurection and the shady dealings surrounding it? I don't think Hustler really has an edge on anyone anymore.
