Hey Cleetus, seeing as you live in N.Y.C, this is going to be a strange recommendation, but check out Bringing Out the Dead by Martin Scorsese. Keep this in mind, it is a dark, dark, dark, and black comedy. I can't stress dark and comedy enough, maybe I have a strange sense of humor, but give it a look. Again, DARK comedy. It's a hidden gem in Scrosese's career. S. P.S. Stress DARK, DARK comedy. Be in the right mood when watching it. I completely "missed" the film the first time around.

Thanks S. I actually live about 50 miles north of NYC but I go into NYC a few times a year. I have seen that movie in the store but ignored it because it was about paramedicsbut i think i will give it a chance based upon your reccomendation. Thanks again S. I don't know if you have seen the dvd tuesday release thread here in this section- since you love flicks and rent a lot you should check it out. There are an assload of dvds released every tuesday in the USA and every thurs or fri I put up a list of what is coming out that following tuesday. Check it out it might help you see something new to rent.

Sweet Cleetus, again, it's a really, really strange movie. Mixes a lot of genres, but if your in the "right" mood the film works (think simp w/o his meds, "cooking eggs"...that's the Funniest (not a word) post I've read in such a long time. That kind of mood, I guess). Again, I feel like I can't stress it enough, but DARK, bleak comedy. I guess rent it when you life is really busy and chaotic, again it's a really STRANGE film, just have the sense of humor you have here on this board when you watch it. I guess, plenty of wierd, why am I laughing at this, since this isn't really funny stuff. But then again, I've laughed my ass off to American Pyscho, Bad Santa, and Natural Born Killers, while my friends watching these films with me were like WTF? I feel like simp saying something like this, but hearing people say "that's just wrong," during what I think is a satire flick, it just makes me laugh that much harder.
Sembene.
edit to add this is a DRAMATIC piece, but with dark funny moments. Stay with it, I know you know how to laugh.

We must have a similar dense of humor dude because I laughed my ass of to american psycho and bad santa too, NBK i just hated so I'll throw that one out the window but I bet I'll like this Bringing out the dead too. Thanks again- I'll try and think of some more of these types of flicks for you- the only one I can think of now with odd quirky humor is Repo Man with emilio estevez- definitely check that one out, it is funny and has great punk/hardcore music in it and a hint of aliens for JRV . Good stuff.

I remember the uproar when the book came out about all of its graphic imagery, but yes, in the movie it really wasn't until he dropped the chainsaw down the stairwell thus killing the fleeing floozy that I realized I'd been had, you just have to laugh.

Bad Santa is best comedy of last 2/3 years.
Terry Zwigoff did also another great movie, Ghost World (with Tora Birch , the mainstream Gauge, and Scarlett Johansson ) which is not a comedy but really good indipendent movie.
And now i cant wait for his next movie, Art School Confidential.
I liked a lot also NBK, it would have been better without usual Oliver Stone's moralism but overall is great movie, American Psycho i loved the book, and as usual is very hard to make a good movie from great book, i can say movie is ok but could be much better.

Awesome, will add to the list, Ghost World that is, heard good things about it, kind of off-beat. Not to sound like a complete misogynist, but his (Zwigoff's) documentary on R. Crumb is very good as well.
From American Psycho:
Waiter: Would you like to hear today's specials? Patrick Bateman: Not if you want to keep your spleen.
or the classic
"Sabrina, don't just stare at it. Eat it." Too many quotes, still have to pick up the special edition to that film.

yes, and this makes me wonder why Zwigoff took so many time to reach some public success, maybe his movies are too much intelligent.
Among Zwigoff my actual fav. directors are Paul Thomas Anderson and Todd Solondz, theirs whole production is higly recommended. Solondz: Storytelling, Happyness, Welcome to Dollhouse PT Anderson: Boogie Nights (best movie about porn) Sydney Magnolia Punch Drunk Love

Nice, Cleetus, Xala is a great film about de-colonialization. It's kind of like the line in the who song "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." I used the sig since Xala is close to Holla (if you hear me). It's a great film, but much different then the other stuff I've recommended here. Black Girl is another great movie about colonalization and de-colonalization (sp?), but political rheotic doesn't belong on this board. Sembene is a great filmmaker, but it's probably difficult getting his stuff in the states very much. Again, a very political director, but great indeed.

Thanks for the heads Up S., I would be interested in seeing those flicks if I could ever find them- but political stuff irks me, unless of course it is concerning Benito or Franco
