Making a mix cd and was wondering if everyone could post their opinions. If you could provide songs that get you hype, make you sad, or songs you "ride" to.

Songs that get you hype or you work out to: "Welcome to the Terrordrome" by Public Enemy. "Bull on Parade" by Rage Against the Machine. "Trapped under Ice" by Metalica (sp?) (crazy white boys turned me on to this). "Don't go on me" (by Pearl Jam, not sure if the title is right). "Roll with the changes," by REO Speedwagon, for Fayner.

Songs that make you sad: "Hurt" the Johnny Cash version (omg). "something I can never have" NIN. Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead (who are these guys, never heard them before).

Songs you "ride" or drive to (does that word make sense? ): "California Love" by 2pac, "In the Club" Ice Cube, "Nobody" by Keith Sweat, "Ignition" by R. Kelly, yea I'm freaky like that.

Just looking for your thoughts.

Sem. look into more of Johnny Cash's older stuff- I love it not only for the emotion it conveys but for the best voice in music.

I agree with this, of course. I'd been a Cash fan for years- seen him at county fairs, auditoriums, and big fancy performing arts centers. In my opinion hooking up with Rick Rubin is the best thing he ever did. Rubin just turned him loose to record whatever he wanted. He let the fans find him instead of pursuing radio hits. All of the American Recordings are great.

I never got mix tapes. This whole business of carefully choreographing one's own emotional responses seems somehow apocalyptic to me, as if society expanded in direct proportion to the degree individuals imploded, the latter reaching a critical mass like uranium-235 in the gadget at Almagordo. I knew a kid in high school who loved the soundtrack to 'Platoon' so much that he condensed Barber's adagio to the most moving 6 or so second excerpt and looped it by way of holding his portable cassette play up to his parents stereo, hitting pause, and playing that excerpt again imperfectly over and over again as he continued to record. At the time, I was sure I was witness to the budding of an artist but now I am certain I was at the threshold of the collapse of a civilization. Tommy works at an autoparts store now, and looks exhausted and strangely unhaunted.
But I'd have the Rolling Stone's 'Tumbling Dice' in my hype-mix for sure.

The triple-CD "Läther" by Frank Zappa is perfect for long car trips, if you dig his music.

Thanks for the recommendations, bornyo, I didn't know the American Recording stuff was a multi-volume set (if we are talking about the same thing). Also, will check out his older stuff Cleetus and Bornyo, the great thing about older music like this is that the cds are usually $9.99/$11.99 and not 17.99-20.99 at the stores. I know it's not that much of a price difference, but I'd rather have two cds over one. Any favorites?

Yes- another good thing about older stuff from guys like Jcash
is that they have a few greatest hits type albums out and cheap too. Buy one of those- it is pure gold my friend: ring of fire, ballad of ira hayes, etc. all the older stuff rocks. you will not be disappointed, Johnny cash's voice in his prime is perfect.
