Oh. My. God. Has anyone seen the newest Penthouse issue? The centerfold is blah (and that's a NICE way to put it), and the printing is absolute crap. In fact, every layout in this issue is horrible! The only girl in there worth looking twice at is Crystal Klein, who is featured in a short and lame-ass girl/girl. The softcore angle on this mag just ain't workin-- either they're munching box or they're not! What, are they trying to do a really bad version of Playboy? Just when I thought the magazine couldn't get any worse, it does. Bob may have been a bit nuts, but at least he could put out a decent magazine. This is so amatuer looking it blows my mind. Notice the sudden absence of photo credit, too. They must be using some real winners to shoot these sets. Ugh!

I thought Penthouse went bankrupt or some shit, ala Al Goldstein ("The Internet is a Fad"). Who the fuck buys a Penthouse magazine these days anyway besides over 65 men with no computer literacy or access and still decent eyesight??
I dunno, it was a great institution in its heyday.

I think Crystal Klein is highly overrated. Nice body but her face is average. The other girl (Cassia Riley) with Crystal in that issue blows her away.
I agree with you about this month's pet. very mediocre.

Meanwhile, the Gucch is furiously working on Caligula 2
Working Title Caligula 2: Electric Boogaloo
Let's face it. Paper is about 9 times as expensive as it was just 10 years ago. Advertisers now think that buying a page in your magazine entitles them to editorialize your content. I don't know why anyone bothers. Magazine Publishing is going to be a dead medium very soon, except for gossip rags that have the benefit of being right next to the check out. All mass media I think will eventually die out to the internet (With the possible exception of movie theatres). The internet is not only going to be our new entertainment, it is going to be our new drug.
To quote Dennis Miller "When an unemployeed auto mechanic can sit in front of his computer and virtual fuck Claudia Schiffer all night for $1.99 a minute, it is going to make crack cocaine look like Sanka"

BINGO! You've obvously got some print experience. This topic could move directly over to the shit list between print shops, advertisers and buying shelf space.
Fuck - where to begin!

true dat.
I don't watch tv anymore. done. over. If i hear something about a show, i'll buy the box set (The Sheild) and watch it on my own schedule.
other than that i have enough random shit on the net to keep me entertained as well as stumble onto shit for my site.

You're not going to like this, Dave, but I'm afraid it's just happened again. My FPC predicts the Ao-unit will go within forty-eight hours.

Holly,
I haven't seen the new Penthouse but to come to their defense, putting out a quality print publication is extremely difficult because you have to rely on advertisers who pay their bills.
My guess is that most advertisers were pretty skeptical about getting into long term, high $ contract with a mag that was already BK, so revenue was probably pretty low. Reality sucks - unfortunately in the print world 'everybody' wants the ads for zip up front to see if they will pull before making a commitment.
Until Penthouse sees some ad revenue, they'll continue to put out a crappy publication... or fold again.
LOL, I knew my post would go up on lukeisback.com. I understand the point about the bad printing, but that doesn't excuse the horrible cover. I've posted it just so you guys can see what I'm talking about. Does that picture, of a ho-hum girl on a boring brown background intice you to buy the magazine? I would venture to say no. In fact, I didn't even recognize that it was Penthouse at first glance-- I thought it was a random foreign mag that we get mailed from time to time. Every girl in the biz would love to grace the cover of Penthouse, so it just baffles me why they picked this girl. It just makes me sad, because I always loved the magazine and was so proud to have my work published in it-- and now it's just unrecognizable. And I know the new owner has very deep pockets that he boasted about putting into the publication-- but I don't see that happening here. Do you?

I figured something was very wrong when Penthouse switched to a different printer about three years ago. The coarser halftones didn't do Tony Ward's photos justice.

Sorry Bob, but I stopped looking at Penthouse when I turned 12 or so. Oh what a blessing Hustler, High Society and Club were!

1. American capitalism has generally abandoned all attempts at maintaining its sugary consumer coating. (The 2% say: "We're Only In It For The Money, Duh.")
2. 98% of the American public isn't appalled by this "revelation" because they completely internalized their role as consumers decades ago.
Holly may be aware of number 1, but has not yet accepted number 2.

Paper's so expensive I doubt any individual could bankroll upgrading that. I've worked in publishing and you can tell how well a magazine's doing from the quality of the advertising it carries. That's tied to the editorial. If people by Penthouse for the pictures (which they do) they should use the highest quality pictures they can on the best paper. They can then use that to sell more ads and pay for the the beter shooters - like you Holly. As they are they're on a downward spiral...

true dat. it's hard to break from that mode until you realize it.
it's so ingrained, I think, into our society. I still have to make a conscious effort not to purchase random shit I don't need.

It's the hardcore shots (including depictions of fisting and pissing) that ended up sending Penthouse to the financial outhouse in the first place. ;-)

Hey Holly, No doubt, it has fallen by the wayside as far as it's known quality. A real shame, and it's too bad that that don't have your services, you're definitely one of the best!!
