I don't know if anyone remembers this, but back in 1997 Mattel Toys tried to go into the business of engineering social consciousness instead of just selling fucking toys, and decided upon this:
I remember that. They also released Sign Language Barbie at the same time. They called her Share a Smile Becky and the controversy was that the Barbie houses were inaccessible to her so they fixed that by putting her in a smaller wheelchair.
Some shit I wrote many years ago:

Speaking of diversifying. Mattel has a black Barbie and calls her Barbie probably because the NAACP would be all over their asses if they called her Shaniqua or something. If it's okay for Barbie to be black, then why can't Barbie be in a wheelchair? If the people at Mattel think kids have a hard time accepting Barbie in a wheelchair, just call her Car Accident Barbie and explain to them that she had gotten a ride in the Kenmobile after he had too many martinis. What is this Share-a-Smile Becky crap?! People with disabilities aren't always happy. If some stranger suddenly started sharing a smile with my friends in wheelchairs, I'd think the stranger was either crazy, demeaning, a pervert, or very very uncomfortable.
Check out her sign.
