How easy is it to tell if the scene will ever be released at the time it is shot?

I suppose one way to tell if it's legit or not is if the guy refuses to wear makeup because "no red-blooded American male wears makeup!" (I understand red-skinned American males are an exception). Or if there's only one light. Or you have to show the cameraman how to turn on the camcorder...
