You guys bring up some damn good points. I love animals, and I think it has a lot to do with the maternal instinct that most women have. Biology has made women into mothers automatically. My boyfriend and I were driving home from dinner the other night and I saw a stray dog crossing the street-- I screamed at him to stop so we could pick it up but he told me I was nuts and kept driving. He was probably right... I've already got a dog who is totally crazy, I don't need to adopt another one!
