Every report I've seen in the press has stated that dude was unarmed. They found some shell casings in the area later, but no evidence it had anything to do with the guy (or if they were "throw casings" the cops tossed out before they knew there was a videotape of the whole fiasco?).

There were apparently 10 cops blazing away at the scene.

I'm pro 2nd amendment, but that doesn't mean I don't worry about the consequences. This case is why I'm all for mandatory gun training and periodic testing for the right to own a gun, and in favor of laws that require that people make every attempt to back away or escape before opening fire. These cops may have panicked like a bunch of schoolgirls, but I bet most gun owners would do even worse.
