I have a new but basic desktop computer (that means cheap). Specs are as follows:

Anyway this computer won't even play the PC version of Guitar Hero (Says it doesn't support my video card). Other than adding another gigabyte of RAM can anyone suggest a good videocard or any other useful upgrades? It would be nice to get a videocard that could handle video capture duties as well as gaming.

I would say get a good gamer graphics card. Nvidia that has at least 256mb of graphics memory 512 if you really wanna get the best effect for Guitar Heroes or expand into other games. And if your running Vista (I assume this is a new computer so you have no choice but have vista ) then get the newest DirectX which I think is 10 for Vista. That should do it. Hope it helps.

I highly recommend Newegg.com. I built a whole new machine about 6 weeks ago from parts purchased there. Really fast shipping and excellent customer service/return policy. The prices are competitive if not cheaper than the competition.

Even better is Directron . Extensive selection and great prices. Not much tech support though.

Completely agree. Just ordered 12TB HDD and a new LCD flatscreen and they arrived in 3 days.

Get more RAM. About $50 at the Crucial web site it appears.

For a video card no specific suggestions but do be careful of power requirements. HP's web site says it does have a PCI-E x16 slot (good) but doesn't bother mentioning power capacity. One manual says that there is a total of 40 watts on the 5v rail for all slots, no other hints. You may need to open the chasssis and read the label on the power supply to make sure it can handle whatever video card you want. The motherboard looks OK but what the heck is the power connector doing behind the memory slots???

The issue with power isn't just power supply capacity but heat. Every watt of power is being dumped as heat into the chassis. Everything above the video card will be heated, as will the North Bright chip that is right next to that slot, unless there is a fan blowing on it.

Ok, for a video card I installed an nvidia geforce 8400gs which has 512mb of ddr2 memory. It was definitely at the lower end of the price range at 90 bucks but blowing big money on this computer would be like these slopes customizing these piece of shit nissans, hondas and small pickups to race them- not worth the money.

I had a 1GB chip so I replaced one 512mb chip with that and I'll get another 1gb chip to replace the other 512mb chip whenever I see it on sale.

We re-installed Guitar Hero and it plays fine now. Not quite as smooth as the console version I'm told, but much much cheaper.

Get the Nvidia 8800gt with 512mb of memory, it's the best card from a price/performance point of view, it's about 200-250$, better than that you have the 8800gts but you only gain 2-3 fps in most games and it costs way more...same for the top range 8800gtx which is older and in some new games is even slower then the 8800gt.

And of course another gb of memory, they're dirty cheap now.

It is economically appealing to be forced to pay for peripherals impossible to privately duplicate.

Sure, the concept of the game seems rather ridiculous.

I guess I didn't outright say it, because there are douchebags on this site who make lewd comments about others children, but it's not me playing the guitar hero. I've never even held the controller in my hand.

I have a sweet Alvarez Yairi and a Baby Taylor I pick up when my urge to strum strikes.

While I get your point, discussing your family on a porn website isn't the most respectful thing either.
