LAS VEGAS (TNA) – Annie Lobert was 19 when she got into prostitution. The year was 1988. A female friend, who was hooking in Hawaii, persuaded Lobert to visit Honolulu with vague promises of money and fun.
Lobert, a self-described thrill seeker, didn’t quite know what her friend had in mind. But she had an idea. And she was game.
However, after eleven years of prostitution, a period in which she was arrested over 25 times, beaten by pimps, and raped by johns, Lobert had seen enough of the lifestyle promised as fun and lucrative.
Lobert, with the help of a former client, got out of the sex industry in 1998, and after experiencing an epiphany in 2005, embarked on a new career path: savior for “fallen women†as founder of Hookers for Jesus.
That’s right, “Hookers for Jesus,†a non-profit organization aimed at providing the financial and emotional support for prostitutes trying to get off the streets.
The name and idea for the organization came to her shortly after listening to a scathing phone message from a woman whom she had considered a friend.
“You’ll never be anything other than an ex-hooker,†the woman told her.
It was then that Lobert claims God spoke to her, saying, “’OK, you may be a hooker, but you’re going to be a hooker for Jesus!’â€
