The media has been predicting the impending death of newspapers and magazines for years and meanwhile I recently unboxed my iPad and the first apps I looked to add were exactly that: Newspapers (NY Times) and magazines (Zinio, Vanity Fair).

Isn't it more of a rebirth or metamorphosis of an old format than it is about its death?

With some similar hand-wringing going on over the future of porn in its current state, I wondered if this wasn't an area ripe for exploitation with a porn based app. I know some porn sites are "optimized" for use with mobile devices, but no real apps out there, or are there?

Of course, you probably won't be able to list it on the iTunes App store any time soon, but couldn't an app be downloaded from outside iTunes? I have downloaded several android apps directly from websites on my cellphone.

With all the various app based tablet devices poised to start being introduced it seems like it's a market getting ready to explode. An app for short video clips based on the pornstar, sex act, etc., etc., along the lines of what an app like Zinio does for magazines seems like a natural for the hungry future porn consumer.

I think part of the fun of a post like this might be to read reasons why it is impossible or impractical to make a porn app to go back to and re-read once somebody finally does it.

Don't most of those devices need to be jailbroken to get porn apps? Ipads do, I don't know about Android and others.

What they're talking about is the actual newspaper being delivered/buying. The actual newsprint is dying, yes. The actual companies are undergoing a significant rebirth, yes.

Don't know about iPad. Just got one a couple of days ago and I'm still learning how to use it. That is what got me thinking about this. I have downloaded "third party" apps written for the android outside of the android market.

Yeah, ipad like iphone, gotta jailbreak it, voiding the warranty to get stuff like that. Once the warranty is over, might as well, but throwing away any recourse on a $500 + electronic device, I'd pass.

No, I don't think they're just talking about the actual newspaper being delivered/buying. I think they are talking about actual large companies going bankrupt, people losing their jobs, content not being created, stories not being covered, people not being hired.

The media is full of dire chicken-little prophesies that are overblown, but the death of many magazines and newspapers (large, medium, and small, local, national, and international) probably isn't one of them.

I haven't written code since taking a high school computer class and I don't see myself taking it up as a hobby any time soon. If I was sitting on a bunch of porn content and felt like making money, I would probably hire somebody to do it for me though. I like the "HBO Go" app. I could see making something similar with a pay-per-view approach if I did have the content though.

Well, in the very beginning you are right. There was absolutely no need for print media, and it took it by storm. Now what you have though is more of a "let's play catch up" approach to it. Some of the bigger papers had the resources to do this, the NY Times for example. Catch up meaning either get with the current century, or GTFO.

A lot of print media didn't have those same resources, and are now struggling. It's a blow, yes. And it might even knock off print media altogether. That is what we're seeing right now though. Only time will tell.

iPad: Tube8.com for example is very nicely optimized for it. Most porn sites wouldn't need apps, just a decent HTML5 web site.

As for newspapers -- what killed them above all was Craig's List. Newspapers got a disproportionate amount of their revenue from classified ads, and Craig's List eliminated that revenue stream overnight. For display ads, the Internet as a whole provided display-ad advertisers with many additional places to advertise, most way cheaper than newspapers. And it also provided people with limitless free news. The combination of all of the above has been lethal.

The iPad may help but only big marquee names like the NY Times, WSJ, etc. Most small/regional papers are doomed. Even the Times needed Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to bail them out.

I'm no expert, but I believe you hack into the operating system to get rid of the restrictions. Jailbroken cell phone can be used on any carrier. Jailbroken Ipad allows you to use apps and programs that aren't pre approved by Steve Jobs.

I haven't tried it yet, but if you have both an iPad and an AppleTV, you can stream certain types of videos directly from your iPad to your TV using a feature called AirPlay. I've seen the icon for doing this appear on certain tube sites when watching an HTML5 video. If I could stream HD-quality video straight to my flat-screen (actually a 100" projection screen), I would pay for that.

yeah i was going to say if you NEED to watch porn on your phone then your imagination must be for shit.. i don't even like watching porn on a computer screen but if you can hook it up big screen style then its all good.

Pretty much all TVs are now computer monitors, too.

I got the original AppleTV years ago which I really like and still use. It had an integrated hard drive big enough to download and store a bunch of movies and TV shows and keep them to watch later (or take with you since it was small and portable) and was full 1080 res and could still use airplay to stream from your laptop or desktop PC.

I received the new one as a gift and I don't like it as much: it is smaller, has no hard drive, and is only 720 res. I don't get why they dropped the resolution and lost the capacity to store movies. I don't have a 100" TV, but I have a 74" and the drop in resolution is noticeable.

The other reason I like the app thing for porn is that while you can erase your visit history on the iPad's web browser, I haven't found a way to eliminate the way it stores the web addresses of previously visited sites from the little box where you enter the URL. So any time you start to enter a web address, the "smart" function (which ain't so damn smart) drops down a listing all your previously visited sites' web addresses that match what you're typing even if you erased your browsing history. Besides, I hate having to erase my entire browsing history to try to cover up going to a porn site.

Why any device that allows you to view porn on the internet isn't more user friendly and socially smart these days just doesn't make sense.



P.S. Just got the 60minutes app on the iPad. Another example of an app that could be used as a template for how you should be able to organize and view porn on a tablet computer.

You sure the original AppleTV was 1080p? I had one, but back then my TV was only 720p anyway, so I have no idea if it went up to 1080p. The reason I doubt it was 1080p is that all the HD content on the iTunes store is 720p so why bother supporting 1080?

Yep it is 1080 got the options setting opened up on the TV right in front of me right now.

That was another little trick I didn't like about the new AppleTV: they took away the option to rent "regular" resolution movies or TV shows when ordering from the AppleTV. If you want to rent or buy a movie or TV show in regular definition (for a cheaper rate) you have to buy it on your computer and stream it to the new AppleTV. That comes off as just a sneaky way to trick people into paying more. If I'm forced to watch some chick flick with my girlfriend without any special effects or action or anything meaningful at all going on visually, it just adds insult to injury to also force me to pay a couple of extra bucks to watch it in hi def.


P.S. You may have hit on why they downgraded, but you can still use it for viewing pics, youtube vids, and other content in full 1080.
