Ok, I know that XPT has been more about lulz than serious discussion since well...since the beginning really, but I would like to get familiar with the thoughts of the fellow pervs on recent change that has taken place in the porno land.
During the first decade of the 21th century, gonzo DVDs dominated the porn market. Sure, companies like Vivid and Wicked never stopped making new "features" but they were heavily "dumbed down" and "gonzoified" compared to the product these companies had been putting out in the golden era of storylines and "contract stars" and generally insignificant in comparison with the sheer volume of gonzo DVDs flooding the market, making millionaires out of talentless idiots such as Jules Jordan and John Stagliano. This dominance of gonzo was partially challenged by the emergence of internet reality porn (most notably bangbros) but that was not a real threat to the gonzo DVD market as it was mostly featured "unknown" amateur whores (as opposed to the "big names" gracing box covers of Elegant Angel releases) and thus appealed to customers that were not all that important for the gonzo market.
More recently however, the big players in the business have been hurting from the competition of countless illegal tube sites offering 1000s hours of pornography for free to the general public. Several companies collapsed altogether and those that survived has been gradually decreasing the number of DVD releases. At the same time Brazzers and other companies have been focusing on production of porn "vignettes" or even whole movies with storyline (most notably porn parodies) and don't seem to be hurting nearly as much as the gonzo producers.
As a result of this, the focus of many porn producers is shifting from gonzo to storyline. For example, Christian who makes most of the content for NA is now considering factors such as scene setup, dialogue and locations just as much as casting the right whore for the scene and choosing the positions that will look good on camera. Mike Quasar, the ZT director who used to claim that porn is just about providing the customer with a depiction of coitus to jerk off to is now "shooting mostly scripted stuff for the foreseeable future". Almost every company has recently released and/or is working on a parody of a popular mainstream movie or TV show. The stunt cocks and whores who work the most these days are often those who can "act"(which in porn often means that they are able to memorize a few lines and deliver them with occasional display of emotion that doesn't look completely out of place).
I think this change will result in a porn market that will be much different from the one we have known during the last 2 decades or so. Gonzo will not disappear altogether but it will become targeted to a very specific niches; there won't be many generic "teen" or "anal" gonzo movies. More and more releases will try to combine intense "real" sex from gonzo with some sort of storyline and production value that was typical for the "golden age" features. The porn jondras as we know them (anal, lesbian, DP, BJ, solo, IR) will not be as relevant in the future and we will see more movies containing several kinds of scenes according to the directors vision. Porn producers in the future will not be just guys with camera and connections but will have to be able to bring some kind of "added value" to the movie.
Agree? Disagree? Discuss!
