First they convert them. The converts achieve a degree of stability (job, apartment, etc.) and begin to kick their hard earned money (tithes) upstairs o the fat men with backwards collars. Finally, the newly minted stable Christians are sent out to make converts of their own, using themselves as "success stories."

Finally, the folks in A.A., while seeking assistance fro a higher power, recognize that, fundamentally, it's up to them whether they succeed or fail. The Jesus Freaks abdicate all personal responsibility by "surrendering to the will of God." Big Difference.

And when are you going to do something about that name, anyway? You've either got a pair of cast iron balls, zero common sense or a sick sense of humor.

Interesting stuff. First, I'd of course accept that Shelley herself is pretty lost in the Movement; she's hardly the Emperor. Still, she is the proximal string puller vis a vis Sierra. That's not to say her own strings aren't being pulled.

But that's probably not so important. I guess the comparison ought to be drawn explicitly at this point: Shelley and the "Sex Industry Survivor" movement are trying to do what Bill W. and AA did for alcoholics. Similar techniques are used (the AA "Higher Power"), and similar complaints are routinely leveled at AA: i.e., it's cultish, it's exclusionary of other treatment methods, it's all about God saving your soul (AA did start as an explicitly Christian movement, that was then modified for a secular culture.

A lot of AA members, especially newer ones, sound brainwashed. Actually, no, they are brainwashed. In time (in my experience, anyway), I've found most of the senior members (5 years plus) still believe in AA community, but take some of the writings and teaching with a grain of salt. But without original brainwashing, it's hard to get an addict to that point, where they can critically survey the program. You kind of have to get them mindlessly addicted to the program at first (surrender to the Higher Power, don't ask questions, just have faith, etc).

Long story short: Shelley Lubben and the movement she's a part of are no more pernicious than AA. Now, some people actually think AA is a menace. But most people (including the psychiatric community) consider it one of the best means of helping addicts stay clean and put their lives back together. Sure, there is brainwashing involved, but sometimes thats required to reach people deep in the throes of a problem.

And by and large, being a porno whore means something's gotten kind of fucked up somewhere, though I'm sure many on this board will defend it tooth and nail. The well-known fact that no one wants their own child or close relatives to do porn or prostitution, or other sex industry work is the best evidence, tried and true as it is, that such arguments are self-serving and disingenuous. The idea that most--not all, but most--of these girls have robust emotional lives and are not in one way or another seriously dysfunctional is ludicrous really. Your second point about A.A. is excellent; I hadn't considered that for some reason. Proselytizing is pretty repugnant stuff, and it does impugn the purity of the motive. I stand by thinking AA has helped a lot of people (including me), even though the stuff they have to tell you to get you to where you can think straight (and for yourself) is pretty heavily strewn with higher-power, surrender talk etc. I guess I'm just struck by the fact that this religious sounding talk does somehow help people, even if it's total bullshit. Psychiatrists--who still haven't come up with a more effective talk-therapy method--always puzzle over that success...
