I like pickles but I only buy them in the jars that are by Vlasic, Mt. Olive, B&G or from the Russian store. All these brands are pretty cheap compared to the "expensive pickles" that are sold in Union Square farmer's market and pickle stores [theres a couple of them].

I don't get the people who go insane if a pickle gets in their burger. I frequently hear "no pickles!" when I am in line at McDonald's or Burger King, but most of the time I think its the black people who don't like pickles. When I went to McDonald's at Brooklyn College, I heard it pretty much every time I've been in there. What's with black people and their hate for pickles?

It's too bad there's not a Walmart near you. I read a very interesting article in Forbes, I think, about how Walmart pushed Vlasic to introduce a gigantic jar of pickles for two or three bucks or something like that, and that gigantic jar killed Vlasic's sales outside Walmart. Because a 55-gallon drum of pickles will last a family for a year or more.

Edit: Oh yeah, here it is. The article was in Fast Company, and the jar is only a gallon of pickles, which is still too Goddamn much. But, I bet a nice cool pickle up the bum feels nice, so there's that too. It's at least a week's worth of that.

I really wanted to buy deli-style pepper strips, but at $5.59 per 16-ounces with half of them filled with brine is just too much muh-nee. I bet that the gallon of pepper strips is around $12.00 at the restaurant supply place.

What brands should I upgrade to?

Stop with the fast food joints. McD and BK and KFC. Buy food at the grocery and a little gas grill or Forman or something and grill fresh beef, chicken, and fish. You can make a better burger at home for even less than your triple doubles.

Alex, a Patty Melt is a hamburger sandwich made on bread fried in butter. You should be able to make that at home. You can buy chicken breasts or even chicken fingers, coat them in panko bread crumbs, and fry 'em up in a little pan with about 1/2" of oil in it (bonus points if the oil has a little butter and bacon grease or lard in it).

What's-his-face, the former star talk radio host Tom Leykis, who now has a free Internet stream, is constantly going on about how cheaply you can make fresh chicken strips at home, as he tells guys to save money for a brighter future. Leykis is 300 lbs., which makes me believe he is making them cheaply at home all the time. You probably ought to give Tom Leykis a listen, Alex, because he loves to coach younger men about how to get some pussy and, yeah, that's about it.

P.S., I missed the reference earlier in the thread, but I just checked out the Pickle Guys and it's a big yes! Loose pickles, sure thing. That place looks great — a wide selection of freshly-made pickled products made by the proprietor instead of in some faceless factory, with less packaging and environmental impact. Totally a great idea. Upgrade to Pickle Guys, Alex.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Their prices are like $8.00 per pound and they taste not as good [since they are pale pickles] as the faceless factory product. The inferior taste is called "malosol" in Russian. Or in another words, they are pickled quickly.
