Anyone with a laptop can DJ. You don't even need to run Serato anymore, you can download a scratch interface on your ipad. DJ's are playing off their Itunes through the headphone jack!
BTW: Never do that. Your laptop headphone jack is calibrated for ear buds. Compressed and EQ'd to match those devices. If you're going to connect your laptop to a sound system, use an I/O box. ive read about a techno dj that records his mixes at home and then plays them at raves.people are aware of this too.smh

Real DJs should still use turntables, however, I like to mess around with djay for iPad to make mixes. Almost brings me back to my days spinning records on college radio, but nothing can replace the feel and sound of vinyl.

Turntables are really just for show while they're scratching. All the audio comes from their laptops and the sound quality is pure shit. MP3's recorded at low res with lossy compression and often not even balanced for L-R. AAC 320??? Fucking joke!
The handfull of real turntablists are rare these days. Guys who really work the wheels are a dying breed.

Yeah, it's easier to carry around a laptop, though ya still gotta know a little something something about EQ, bpms and tempo, but that doesn't stop people from calling themselves DJs. Not even radio DJs use turntables anymore, cept for maybe on college radio. pshaw!
