Obama just keeps making Bush look better. On Day 70 of the Gulf Coast oil spill: US accepts international assistance for Gulf spillWhat made Bush look so bad with Katrina was the lack of preparation. But, can you imagine if it had taken 70 days to start digging deep in getting needed resources to address the aftermath? And, resources like this have just been offered to us. It's not even like we had to beg.

Northrup I see your point but the oil spill is far different from Katrina. I have a hard time faulting Bush or any POTUS for not allowing foreign troops/volunteers on our soil to clean up a mess. This oil business is not rocket science- it's petro science and water purification. And it isn't on US soil. I say bring the best technology to bear on this situation and let BP pay.
In some ways I understand BP's reticence to ask for help from the US or anyone, because this cleanup process will be financially abused, and terribly. But at 70 days and counting you gotta stop the oil.
They should have had pre-qualified contractors, globally, who can bring the best techniques to any forseeable situation. And this situation was foreseeable.

My understanding is that plugging the hole is BP's responsibility because they're the ones with that expertise. The US government has no expertise in that area. All the cleanup around the well, BP may (and should) pay financially for that, but it's US and local governments doing it. And, that's where all the criticisms of incompetence (after the spill, anyway) has been. People involved in the thing know BP's part, plugging the well itself, isn't something that's known how to do with any degree of certainty.
The lack of skimmers to take the oil out of the water around the well has been a big issue. That story I linked above talks about us finally taking some from Japan. Here's another story that was going around the web a couple of days ago: Huge oil-skimming ship makes Virginia stop en route to Gulf of Mexico
They believe that thing can skim as many gallons of oil per day as have been skimmed the entire time since the spill happened. So, it's not been tested in real world situations yet. So, what? Why has it taken over 2 months to even begin looking at it as an option?
Foreign countries were offering resources within a week of that thing happening. No excuse for not even looking into it. Foreign/not, a lot of those offers could have been taken advantage of with plenty of time to ensure that we weren't being sabotaged.

I think you and I are in agreement that we should have insisted on and welcomed help offshore from wherever it comes. (Maybe for the first time, unless you are Simp). I was just pointing out that there is a difference between letting a foreign ship skim the ocean hundreds of miles offshore compared to placing foreign troops on our soil to deal with the katrina damage.

Who cares if they trust us, because they will never rat out Al Qaida. It's the state departments job to reach out, not NASA's. I've grown up watching NASA go from an organization born to explore the universe into just another bloated government bureaucracy who's only real cause is continuance of its funding.

I'd actually be highly critical if Obama did take on the marijuana laws head-first. It's a terrible annoyance, but then you look at how ridiculous our debt levels are, how arcane our tax code is, and how much more we're paying for health care than other countries. Plus, our economy sucks right now. Putting marijuana laws in the spot light right now, not a good idea. More important work to do. If it could be done with the same level of attention as the equally ridiculous Don't Ask Don't Tell policies, then yeah. But, I don't think it could.
