The Obama State Dept sent Vlad Putin of Russia a "secret note". It offered to scrap our European missile defense plans in exchange for them helping us control Iran's nuclear ambitions. The Russians LAUGHED THEIR ASSES OFF. They declined the offer and leaked the "secret note" the international press to embarrass America.
What clueless Odumbo didn't grasp is that the Russians want trouble in the Mideast because it drives up the price of oil, which is their prime source of income. That is the reason they've been selling nuke materials to Iran and helping them arm themselves all along.
When the Russians finally stopped laughing, they moved on to stunned disbelief at the amatuerish overture. The secret note is what one might expect from a high school kid who got to be President for one day. For over 1000 years nations have avoided this kind of embarrassent by using diplomacy. This is where an underling from country A feels out an underling from country B before a leader risks putting his ass out there and looking the incompetent fool.

the weird thing about this is that obama has been against missile defense in europe from the beginning, right? I might be wrong about that, but I thought that was something he campaigned against and promised to end or let die were he elected. so, unless the ruskies have been sleeping for the past year or so it seems that it would be hard to use the threat of ending missile defense as a bargaining chip for help with iran when russia knows obama has been against it from the start. well, unless obama reads xpt and planned his tact by gauging russian logic from reading panzer's posts.

Here we go, I haven't done the numbers yet, but 5 minutes got me the data. Let's see.
A study finds that about half of personal bankruptcies are for medical reasons. This study is in dispute, so we will see how much slack there is in the final numbers.
There are 60 * 24 = 1440 minutes in a day, so we need 2880 bankruptcies for medical reasons each day to make one every 30 seconds. If half are for medical reasons, we need 5760 bankruptcies per day to make Obama's claim, accepting the disputed study.
I found a graph of daily bankruptcies.
Looks like we are there.
Now, I hope you see the President's larger point, about how health care costs are helping cripple the economy. About how we can pick some low hanging fruit, do things both progressives and conservatives agree upon to reduce costs. Find a long term solution that works.

My parents (Gods forgive their born-again Christian, Far-Right, Republican souls) when talking about a National Health Care system, claim Obama is trying to turn this country socialist. This is stated without ever once giving consideration to the fact that they are already collecting Social Security (which was decried as socialism in 1935 when it was enacted) and receive their health care from a taxpayer subsidized National Health Care system already in place (Medicaid) whose participation is limited (discriminated) by age.
The entire purpose of government is to provide for the national defense, maintain the nation's infrastructure and economy, and care for the well-being of it's citizens.
That any person in this country (the ONLY industrialized nation on the planet WITHOUT a National Healthcare System) suffers because to do otherwise would eat into the "profit margin" is, at the very least, criminally negligent.

People are filing BK for many reasons. Sure, lack of insurance is one of them. But other more obvious reasons would be loss of income or financial irresponsibility. A majority of the BK's now are people that are just walking away from their financial obligations because it's easier.

These are the same ass-wipes that were giving me shit for driving a perfectly good 2 year old ML500 instead of 'taking out some equity and upgrading.'
I say fuck them and any idiot that didn't buy health insurance and was too stupid to 'pull a mexican' and get free health services at the clinic or county hospital. Health coverage isn't a right. Want health insurance? Make money and buy it or go to work for an employer that will subsidize it.

Liberal = A person who will always do the right thing, given that the right thing is also the politically correct thing.
Libertarian = A person tired of paying for what liberals and conservatives believe is right.

I think more people would take libertarians seriously if they had some kind of remotely realistic policy proposals. No, "legalize all drugs, bring all troops home, return to gold standard and abolish all taxes" doesn't count.
That being said, many of my favorite authors identified themselves as libertarians or have been claimed by libertarians as their own. Too bad most current libertarians are bunch of pretenders without any will to power...

Progressives care about poor people because they make up so much of the voting block for them. In particular they care about keeping them dependent to their federally funded programs so that every four years they can play the "whoever I'm running against is going to cut your entitlements" card.
Libertarians don't believe in no government. We believe in keeping government's noses where they belong. Federal government takes care of federal issues (national defense, immigration, foreign policy, global trade, natural disasters that affect portions of many states, etc.) state government takes care of state issues (state infrastructure, state university systems, water rights, etc.) local government takes care of local issues (zoning laws, liquor laws, what is or isn't taught at primary schools, snow emergency routes, etc.) . We believe in government but that government has set boundaries and strict limits within those boundaries to keep the government from becoming The Creature That Ate Cleveland.
