I have been a foodie my entire life on different levels. I grew up with parents who cooked from scratch. We never had soda in the house and my mom would give me fresh veggies to snack on while I colored as she was cooking. She was an excellent cook and we had food from all over the world. I had egg drop soup in my lunchbox! We went to authentic Italian delis for hoagies, patisseries for sweets, etc. Sure there was the occasional McDonald's trip or Carvel, and I dug it, but I never really craved the stuff.
From age 16 and on, I was vegetarian for 8 years, vegan for 2 years, then ate meat again for years. While performing, I was mostly vegan but the problem was that I was eating a grain based diet. That's where many vegs and vegans fail and they don't even know it.
Towards the end of performing, I got hip to Weston A. Price where I learned the dangers of soy and the benefits of meat as long as it's not processed or in some microwave or fast food form. I call that 'factory food,' Luckily, I never in my life got into factory food and always felt it was cheating yourself from real, honest to goodness taste. Then I started reading David Wolfe and my diet was mostly raw and has been for the past 4 years. Raw food means food that isn't meant to be cooked such as veggies and fruit. Cooking depletes its enzymes and sucks all the oxygen out; thus negating the point of even eating greens and such. So much of what we crave is a conditioned response honed by advertising and fake crap put in pre-packaged food to make you an addict drone. Honestly, since I ditched the grain based diet years ago for mostly raw, my metabolism is faster and my energy is through the roof.
Currently, I'm reading a lot of Douglas Graham. He is 100% raw vegan and eschews even agave syrup and nuts. I'm trying that now and like it. We'll see how that goes. If not, I'll return back to high-raw and eat meat way before I'll touch dairy or a grain. I'm also on a raw food message board. We are all at different places on our journey.
I am a food nerd. Anyone here can pm me if they have any questions.

Being a bit of a health buff and food nerd myself I have always read your post ont he subject with interest, but then you post about trying all those drugs.
How do you justify trying to be so healthy with your food intake yet counterbalancing it with putting toxins into your system? I know you said that you never really got into them, but the way I read it was because you didn't get the high you were expecting. Had you have it sounded to me like you would have become a user... explain the seeming contradiction?

I'm considering trying a raw food diet but I don't have any time to prepare very involved meals. Plus I am incapable of starving myself-- I feel like doing a juice fast would kill me. I need energy to work-- there is a lot of manual labor involved in what I do (yes I do lift and carry heavy equipment). What's a good, simple raw food diet to try?

Let's see, I've tried drugs less than 100 times in my life compared to the millions of times I've eaten healthy. The math doesn't add up enough to do any damage. I seriously think I'm just not cut out to be a drug addict. I get bored too easily anyway. I always took care of myself the day with carrot juice and spas. If I was an addict, I'd be like Ben Stiller in Permanent Midnight. At least I never smoked. Smoking is way more harmful and anti-aging than trying drugs.

Juice fasts are crap.
Just do little things like choose as many raw foods over cooked foods as possible. Incorporate salads sans cheese and croutons into your day. Fruit in the morning is great, and you are less hungry when you mono meal. That means a huge helping of one kind of fruit instead of a variety.
If you still need something else to eat a few hours later, fine. Just make sure to stay away from any processed foods. Staying off processed foods is the first step to feeling full after you've had just fruit or greens. Most people can't go raw cold turkey. There are a lot of transitional steps. Yes, all the labor intensive meals at raw food restaurants are yummy gourmet goodness, but forget those. There are plenty of quick, easy recipes you can find online like marinara sauce, guacamole, and soups. All you need for this stuff is a blender or a food processor. I stay away from anything that involves soaking nuts overnight (heh) or that needs a food dehydrator.
You can blend your own chocolate milk with mint sprigs, raw cocao (not cocoa), and 40 calorie almond milk. You can get the almond milk at regular grocery stores. It's considered processed food among rawists, but so what. Raw cocao is even being debated on raw forums, but whatever. Most people that debate them have long passed their transitional stage.
Lately, I've been on giveittomeraw.com. Ignore some of the hippie nonsense and get to the food. That place is cool.

I find raw easier. The more I got into it, the more I took pleasure in the most simple tastes like papayas for breakfast one morning or a pineapple the next. Just slice and dig in! Easy preparation and easy clean up. I have tons of energy and feel full from the real, actual nutrients in real food. The more raw I ate, the less I craved bread and other such junk.

Well it's the new year and one of my resolutions was to actually start posting. I have been enjoying this forum for over a year but never got around to signing up. The second resolution was to get back in shape. This may sound a little wierd asking for health tips on a porn board but what the hell. My problem is that a few years ago I went through a battle with lymphatic cancer. Stage 3B.  Went from 155 to 112 and then because of chemo (and over-eating) I swelled up to 232. I have cut out soda and most fried foods and am down to 212 but my eating habits suck ass. There is NO way I could stop eating meat completely. (Kinda like Christianxxx ha ha) Any body here been through the joys of chemo and know the best way to get back into shape and the types of food I should be eating?
